SELECTING AN
APPROPRIATE STYLE

SELECTING AN
APPROPRIATE STYLE
It is a systematically style its
not just word but also
generally should guide how
you talk with other people
and how you present yourself
orally.

SERIOUS VS HUMOROUS
ATMOSPHERE
During a graduation speech or an award banquet
address, you want to encourage the personal
reflection of your listeners.
During a fraternity gathering or holiday
celebration, you want to create a social interactive
atmosphere.
Victory speeches are time for celebration and
unity.
The speaking atmosphere is the mindset or mental
attitude that you attempt to create in your
audience

DOUBLE SPEAK
Advertisers, Politicians and Military
spokespersons often using words that
deceive or mislead.
The use of a technical jargon that
sidesteps issues of distorts meanings.
The pacification for eradication,
strategic withdrawal for retreat
accidental delivery of the armaments for
bombing of the wrong target.

NARRATIVE STYLE
Either style can be effective,
depending
upon
the
audience
expectations
and
the
speakers
resourcefulness in generating an
effective argument.
The propositional form provides a
concise logical series should statement
to direct audience action.
The narrative form puts your talent as
a storyteller to the test.

PROPOSITIONAL VS
NARRATIVE STYLE
Speaking styles can be largely propositionally
or narrative. A propositional style emphasizes
a series of claims, with supporting evidence
for each. Un this style, claims suggest what
action should be taken over or what policy
should be adopted or rejected.
A narrative style however, couches claims
and evidence in a more informal, often
personal story that emphasis the general
claim being advance.

CONT...
While both styles make claims on an
audience attentions belief and action,
they present their arguments in radically
different ways.

PROPOSITIONAL
STYLES
You should see your advisor regularly
because he or she can check on your
graduation requirements.
Advisors have been trained to understand
this school requirements.
You should see your advisor regularly to
check out your own hopes and fears with
someone.
Good advisor helps you to decide
whether to want to continue with a major.

NARRATIVE STYLES
I thought I could handle my own
advising around this school and that
attitude got me into trouble.
I could, read and I thought I knew
what I wanted to take.
When I was about half done with my
program, however, I realize two things.
I had not met half about the general
education requirement for graduation
