Condensation

Condensation is the change of the physical state

of matter from gas phase into liquid phase, and is
the reverse of evaporation.
When the transition happens from the gaseous
phase into the solid phase directly, the change is
called deposition.

Drop and Film condensation

Introduction to Exp
In this experiment a vertical copper tube in length
of 1285mm with internal diameter of 2mm and
0.5 mm of wall thickness was considered.
Considering the wave effect on the condensation
process the convective heat transfer coefficient
on the condensation surface was calculated. The
heat exchanger was counter flow type and the
fluids in heat exchange process were steam (in
vapor phase) and water

SOLUTION METHODS
Thermal resistance method
Wilson plot method

General idea of solution

Qv = mv . (hv,in-hc,out) .(1)
T= [(tv,in-tw,out) - (tv,out-tw,in)] / ln[(tv,in-tw,out) /
(tv,out-tw,in)] (2)
k= Qv / [ nT . (L-H). T] ..(3)

Thermal resistance method

1/k = Rv + RT + Rw .(4)
Nuw = 1.86 . (Rew. Prw. (De/L))0.33 (5)
w= Nuw.. w / (De)
.(6)

Wilson plot
v = C. qv0.80 ..(7)

1/k = (1/(.Di.C)). qv-0.80 + [(ln (De/Di) / 2..r) +

(1(/.De.w))]..
(8)
A = (.Di.C) (9)

B= [ln(De/Di) / (2..T)]+ (1/(.De.w)) .(10)

RESULTS FROM THERMAL

RESISTANCE METHOD
The condensation heat transfer
coefficient v = 7139 468 W/(m2K)
with accuracy 6.6% .
The correlation quality of
condensation heat transfer
coefficient obtained from Thermal
resistance method and Wilson plot
method was 98.8%.

The heat transfer coefficient w = 1264 1.8

W/(m2K) on external surface of tube (site of
cooling water) was predicted by Grber
equation.

Results from wilson plot

The condensation heat transfer
coefficient is v = 7229 475 W/(m2
K) with accuracy 6.6% obtained by
linear regress function .
A = 178.685 [m-1]
B = 0.08437 [mKW-1]
constant C = 0.8907

The heat transfer coefficient on

external surface of tube (site of
cooling water) was determined on w
= 1260.1 W/(m2K) .

Comparison of condensation heat transfer coefficient

obtained from Thermal resistance method and Wilson

INFLUENCE OF MASS FLOW RATE

INFLUENCE OF INLET TEMPERATURE

CONCLUDING REMARKS
(I)The quality correlation of results obtained
from Thermal resistance method and Wilson
plot method was on value 98.8%. The impact
of mass flow rate and inlet temperature of
water steam on condensation heat transfer
coefficient was evaluated, but the impact was
not significant.

(II)If the difference of results obtained from

Wilson plot method and Nusselt equation was
caused mainly by waves on condensate surface,
then the waves effect on condensation heat
transfer coefficient was about 20.5% in this
presented case.
