Objectives Resolution of 1949

Objectives resolution was passed on 12th March 1949 while Liquate Ali
Khan was the Prime Minister and Khawaja Nazimuddin was the 2nd
Governor General at the time.

Objective Resolution-background
Under Section 8 of the Indian Independence Act, 1947, the
Government of India Act, 1935, became with certain adaptations,
the working constitution of Pakistan.
However, establishment of a truly Islamic society was the aim of
Quaid. As a result, a Constituent Assembly was provided for the
new dominion of Pakistan under the Independence Act. The
Constituent Assembly had a dual purpose, to make a constitution
for Pakistan and also to act as a legislative body till the new
constitution is passed and enforced.

Objective Resolution-Why and how?


The Objectives Resolution was the first constitutional Document :The foundation' of
The Constitutional Developments n Pakistan.
It Provided Parameters And Sublime Principles To the legislators.
It Made The constitution-making Process Easy.
Task Setting some particular Objectives before Them That Would Be Acceptable To
The People of Pakistan.

This resolution was passed by the First Constituent Assembly in March 1949 under
leader ship of Liaquat Ali Khan.
It contained those objectives on which the future constitution was to be based as stated
by the founder of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam in February 1948, said:
"The constitution of Pakistan will be democratic and based on the fundamental laws of
Islam....Islam and its ideology has thought us the lesson of democracy.
Objectives Resolution, which is considered to be the "Magna Carta" in Pakistans constitutional
history, proclaimed the following principles:

Main Features of Objective Resolution

Soverignty belongs to Allah alone but Allah has delegated it to the State of
Pakistan through its people for being exercised within the limits prescribed by
Him as a sacred trust.
The State shall exercise its powers and authority through the chosen
representatives of the people.
The principles of democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance and social justice, as
enunciated by Islam, shall be fully observed.
Muslims shall be enabled to order their lives in the individual and collective
spheres in accordance with the teachings of Islam as set out in the Qur'an and
Sunnah.
Adequate provision shall be made for the minorities to freely profess and
practice their religions and develop their cultures.
Pakistan shall be a federation.
Fundamental rights shall be guaranteed.
The judiciary shall be independent.

Importance of Objective Resolution :


Objectives Resolution is one of the most important and
illuminating documents in the constitutional history of
Pakistan. At the time it was passed, Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan
called it "the most important occasion in the life of this
country, next in importance, only to the achievement of
independence."
The importance of this document lies in the fact that it
combines the good features of the Western and Islamic
democracy.
Objectives Resolution became a part of the constitution of
Pakistan in 1985 under the Eighth Amendment, Article 2A
of the Constitution.
