Project Case Study #1
Management of Construction Debris
Ohio University, USA
Abstract
The case study is all about minimizing the amount of
waste/debris from a construction or renovation project that goes to
landfill. The goal of the study is to recycle as much material as
possible and get the most out of them in order to minimize the need
for new raw materials, thus helping the environment and cutting
costs.
The procedures and steps needed in order to accomplish
properly is also discussed. To screen and segregate the debris
thoroughly, the team in charge will need enough time prior to the
start of construction or renovation in order to avoid delaying the
said construction/renovation. Rushing the R&R process will result to
overlooked items that will most probably just end up in the landfill
instead of being reused/recycled. Things needed to ensure a smooth
process include a designated spot on-campus for segregation,
vehicles and carts for transport, and laborers or volunteers.
As for the planning stage, finding a contractor that supports
R&R is important. There is a bigger chance of this happening with
smaller contractors. It is also very important to be involved as much
as possible during the planning of the construction/renovation itself.

Project Expectations
This study aims to decrease the amount of waste generated
during construction/renovation to a complete minimum in order to
protect the environment by saving natural resources, reduce the
amount of waste being sent to landfill thus rendering them
completely useless, proper segregation of waste resulting in the
prevention of unauthorized disposal of waste, and increase
recycling and reuse on campus and neighboring communities.

Project Success
The project was a success because after implementation, all
possible C&D waste was being recycled or reused and the amount
of waste that reaches landfills has greatly reduced. In return, the
University has saved money in disposal costs. This all became
possible because of proper planning and implementation of the
project.
