How do Producers

Harness Light Energy

from the Sun?

What is photosynthesis?
What is are the different chemicals that are needed in
photosynthesis?
Where does photosynthesis happen?

Photosynthesis
The process in which
plants make their food by
harnessing light energy
(photons) to start a
reaction that will H2O and
CO2 into Glucose (Sugar).
Photosynthesis happens
inside the Granum. Inside
the granum has stacks of
thylakoids. Each thylakoid
contains layers of fats and
chlorophyll.

Parts of the Chloroplasts

Terms to Remember:
ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) combines with a Phosphorus
to form ATP.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) Provides chemical energy for
living things. Turns to ADP after production of energy.
NADP (Nicotimamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate
(NADP+)) It combines with hydrogen in water to form NADPH
NADPH (Nicotimamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate
Hydrogen) it is the reducing chemical used to produce glucose
in photosynthesis.
Photon Light Energy, Used to start the process of
photosynthesis.

Phases of Photosynthesis
Light-Dependent Reaction

Light-Independent Reaction

Light-Dependent Reaction
Chlorophyll
Photoactivation It is the
first major step in lightdependent reaction. It is
the capture of photons
(light energy) that results
in the release of energized
electrons
Chl + Light Energy Chl+
+ 2e-

Light-Dependent Reaction
Photolysis - It is the second major
phase in light-dependent reaction. It
involves the splitting of molecules
into hydrogen ions, electrons and
oxygen gas in the presence of lightactivated chlorophyll. The excited
chlorophyll can return to ground
state by getting back the electrons
they released or by getting
electron from water.
2H20 4H+ + 4e- +O2
Chl+ + 2e- Chl
NADP+ + H+ + 2e- NADPH

Light-Dependent Reaction
Photophosphorylation it
is the third major phase of
light-dependent reaction.
It involves the transfer of
light energy absorbed by
chlorophyll to molecules
of ATP.

NOTE!!
The ATP and the NADPH produced in Light-Dependent
Reaction will be used in Light-Independent Reaction
(AKA. Dark Reaction, Calvin Cycle.)
