The simple past tense : form


Regular Verbs: spelling rules
Form the past tense of most verbs by
adding ed to the base form.

For verbs ending in e or ie, add d

For one- syllable verbs ending in one


vowel + one consonant, double the
consonant and add ed.

IRREGULAR VERBS DO NOT USE -ED

Here are the rules:


If the verb ends in the sound /t/ or /d/, we
pronounce the ed ending /Id/
Examples:

If the verb ends in a voiced consonant


sound /d/ (/b/, /g/, /v/, /z/, /l/, /r/, /m/, /n/,

a vowel, we pronounce the ed ending /d/

If the verb ends in a voiceless


consonant sound apart from /t/
