Number of PCU
PCU is dimensioned separately for PAoEth and PAoTDM sites and further
separately for satellite site i.e. we may end up having 5 types of PCUs

- PAoTDM terrestrial site PCU
- PAoTDM satellite site PCU
- PAoEth terrestrial site PCU

BSC Dimensioning
Number of PCU
PCU2-D or PCU2-E are required for Packet Abis. Neither PCU1 nor
PCU2-U are supported.
One PCU can handle only cells connected via legacy Abis or cells
connected via Packet Abis but not both at the same time
Target PCU utilization factor U should be of 50% (to leave
enough space for territory upgrades and at the same time allow for high
overbooking)
PS multiplexing is not implemented in RG20
The number of PCUs can be calculated from the following formula:
U1 = 50%
U2 = 70%

Then, the number of PCUs is typically less for Packet Abis in comparison with

HW dimensioning FlexiBSC
BSC3i Capacity Evolution
(*1): BCSU capacity (per unit) steadily grows as an individual unit handles traffic of 110 TRX, 200 TRX, 500 TRX and 700 TRX for BSC3i
(*2): SS7 capacity steadily grows as available bandwidth determines the actual capacity rather than the number of links hence capacity evolution of an individual SS7 link
allows to satisfy higher and higher SS7 bandwidth requirements: 64/128/256 kbit/s links are possible in BSC3i 660,
64/128/256/512 kbit/s and HSL are possible in BSC3i 1000/2000 as well as FlexiBSC
(*3): achievable Erlang figures always depend on Traffic Model the BSC has to cope with; the figures reported in the table are achievable with nominal call mix:
(*4): Total number of TRX and BCF objects is 6000 i.e. if 4200 TRXs are used, around 1800 BCFs can be used to leave enough control channels for
transmission and signaling
(*5): Total number of LAPD links depends on SS7 realization => in case of SS7 over IP (SIGTRAN) is equal to 6144

Step 3. Number of cells
According to Table 1, the number of cells considered in the dimensioning
example is 2400. The maximum number of cells (BTS) in FlexiBSC (RG20)
(S15) at maximum #TRX is 4200. Then,
# FlexiBSC = 2400 / (4200 * 80%) = 0,71
Step 4. Number of sites
The number of sites is 750. The maximum number of sites in FlexiBSC (RG20)
(S15) is 1800. Then,
# FlexiBSC = 750 / (1800 * 80%) = 0,1
42
# FlexiBSC
Step 5. Number of BCSU
As mentioned on section 2.3.4, the number of BSCU required for the example
is: 15. From Table 10, the number of BCSU per FlexiBSC cabinet in RG20
(S15) is 6, then:
# FlexiBSC = 15 / 6 = 2,5
Step 6. Number of PCU
The number of PCUs was calculated on Table 6 and Table 7, by adding up the
values then a total of 24 PCUs is required for the example. The number of
PCUs per FlexiBSC in RG20 (S15) is 30. Then:
# FlexiBSC = 24 / (30* 80%) = 1,0
43
# FlexiBSC
Step 7. Number of ETP
#ETP = #ETPT +#ETPE = 15 + 1 = 16
# FlexiBSC = 16 / 6 = 2,6
# FlexiBSC = max (1.6, 2.5, 0.71, 0.1, 2.5, 1.0, 2.6) = 2.6 (round up = 3).
Note: #BCSU, #PCU, #ETPT/E, #ETS2 are # of active units. Due to
redundancy selection the actual number of units is typically higher.
