Recycling in the Biosphere

VOCABULARY
Biogeochemical Cycles Process in
which elements, chemical compounds, and
other forms of matter are passed from one
organism to another and from one part of
the biosphere to another.

Cycles of Matter
Topic:
Cycles of
Matter

How does
energy flow
differ from
cycles?
What are
the cycles
of matter?

Information:

Unlike the one-way flow of energy, matter

is recycled within and between
ecosystems.

Carbon Cycle
Topic:
Carbon
Cycle
What moves
carbon
through its
cycle?

Information:

1. Carbon is cycled through the

ecosystem by the biological processes
of photosynthesis, cellular respiration
and decomposition.
2. Also by the geological processes of
volcanic activity and erosion, and
human activities such as mining and
burning of fossil fuels.

Phosphorus Cycle

Phosphorus Cycle
Topic:
Phosphorus
Cycle
Where is
Phosphorus in
our
biosphere?
Why is it
essential to
living
organisms?
How do we
get the
phosphorus
we need?

Information:

Phosphorus remains on land and in ocean

sediments as inorganic phosphates and is
cycled through the ecosystem as plants
absorb phosphates in the soil

Phosphorus is needed by organisms as a

component of DNA.

The phosphate moves from producer to

consumer in the food web

Sulfur Cycle

Topic:
Sulfur Cycle

Information:

Where is
Sulfur in our
biosphere?

Sulfur is mainly found on Earth as

sulfates in rocks or as free sulfur

It kills molds and bacteria.

Sulfur is released into the atmosphere

through the burning of fossil fuels

Why is it
essential to
living
organisms?
How does it
get there?

The Nitrogen Cycle

VOCABULARY
Nitrogen Cycle nitrogen moves slowly
through the cycle and is stored in reservoirs
such as the atmosphere, living organisms,
soils, and oceans along its way.

Nitrogen Cycle
Topic:
Nitrogen
Cycle

Information:

Where is
all the
nitrogen
on Earth?

Approximately 80% is in the

atmosphere. It is not useable for living
things.

So, how
do we get
the
nitrogen
we need?

Plants get nitrogen from soils and water.

Animals get nitrogen from eating plants
or other animals that contain molecules of
nitrogen.

Nitrogen Cycle

Information Pages:

Nitrogen
Cycle

How does
the
Nitrogen
get there?

When organisms die, their bodies decompose

bringing the nitrogen into the soil on land or into
the oceans.
