MEASUREMENT

Quality or value of

USE of information to help teachers to make better DECISIONS

Measurement (Asaad, 2004)

Is the process of measuring the individuals
intelligence, achievement, personality, attitudes,
and values and anything that can be expressed
quantitatively.
It is the quantitative description of an attribute or
character

Measurement (Airasian, 2000)

The process of quantifying or assigning a number
to performances
A numerical score is used to represent the
individuals performance
Common example: When a teacher scores a quiz or
test
17 out of 20 items correct on Biology test
Score of 65 percent on Math test
Score of 85 percent on creative essay

Measurement (Oriondo, 1984)

A process by which information
about the attribute or characteristics
of things are determined and
differentiated.

Evaluation
A process of summing up the results of
measurements or tests, giving them some
meaning based on value judgments. (Hopkins/Stanley in
Oriondo, 1984)

In Education:
it is a systematic process determining the extent
to which instructional objectives are achieved by
the students (Grouland in Oriondo, 1984)

Evaluation (Asaad, 2004)

a continuous process
the process of determining the extent to which instructional
objectives are attained.
involves measurements and assigning qualitative meaning
through value judgments.
represents both objective and subjective approaches in
assessing students learning
in a more broad perspective, evaluation is a means of
determining the effectiveness of teaching methodologies,
instructional materials and others

Mrs. Peralta wishes to make an ASSESSMENT on the

mathematics readiness of Kyla order to decide where to start
instruction for her.
First, she gave her an appropriate paper-and-pencil TEST of
mathematics readiness.
Kylas score on the test, 45 percent of the items correct,
provides a MEASUREMENT of her math readiness.
talks (non test) to the student about math
watches her while she does math exercises, and
checks prior grades and test scores in her school record
file
She then thinks about all the assessment information she has
collected.
She EVALUATES, and makes judgment about Kylas current
stage of readiness in math.
Her final decision, based on her ASSESSMENT AND
EVALUATION, is to recommend a tutor to help Kyla catch up
to the rest of the class.
