The Materials and Resources (MR) credit category

focuses on minimizing the embodied energy and the
other impacts associated with it.

EMBODIED ENERGY

MATERIAL
AND
RESOURCES

embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the

processes associated with the production of a building,
from the mining and processing of natural resources to
manufacturing, transport and product delivery.
embodied energy does not include the operation and
disposal of the building material.
1. Every building is a complex combination of many processed
materials, each of which contributes to the buildings total
embodied energy.
2. Renovation and maintenance also add to the embodied
energy over a buildings life.
3. Choices of materials and construction methods can
significantly change the amount of energy embodied in the
structure of a building.

PREREQUISITE 1 : STORAGE AND COLLECTION

RECYLABLES
Intent
To facilitate the reduction of waste generated by
building occupants that is hauled to and disposed
of in landfills.
Requirements
Provide a dedicated area for recycling for the
entire building. Materials must include, at a
minimum: paper, corrugated cardboard, glass,
plastics and metals.

CREDIT 1.1: BUILDING REUSE: MAINTAIN

EXISTING WALLS, FLOORS, AND ROOF (1-3 PTS)
Intent

MATERIAL
AND
RESOURCES

To extend the lifecycle of existing building

stock, conserve resources, retain cultural
resources, reduce waste and reduce
environmental impacts of new buildings as they
relate to materials manufacturing and
transport.

CREDIT 1.2: BUILDING REUSE: MAINTAIN INTERIOR

NONSTRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (1 PT)
Intent

MATERIAL
AND
RESOURCES

To extend the lifecycle of existing building stock,

conserve resources, retain cultural resources, reduce
waste and reduce environmental impacts of new
buildings as they relate to materials manufacturing
and transport.
Reuse 50% (by area):
Interior walls
Doors
Floor coverings
Ceiling systems

CREDIT 2: CONSTRUCTION WASTE

MANAGEMENT (1-2 PTS)
Intent
To divert construction and demolition debris
from disposal in landfills and incineration
facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered
resources back to the manufacturing process
and reusable materials to appropriate sites.

CREDIT 3: MATERIALS REUSE (1-2 PTS)

Intent

MATERIAL
AND
RESOURCES

To reuse building materials and products to

reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce
waste, thereby lessening impacts associated
with the extraction and processing of virgin
resources
