What is SIMPLE MACHINE?

-device for altering the
magnitude or direction of a
force;
-device for overcoming
resistance at one point by
applying force at
some
other point

Types of Simple Machine

Lever

Wheel and axle

Pulley
Screw
Wedge
Inclined plane

What is a lever ?
-used to help move heavy
or firmly fixed load with one
end when pressure is applied
to the other
-has a rigid bar resting on
a pivot

Parts of lever
Effort- force that moves
the lever
Load- object the lever
trying to move
Fulcrum/ Pivot- point
on which lever
moves, known as
pivot

What is Wheel and Axle?

- variation of the lever

-can move a load much
farther than lever
-large wheel rigidly
attached to a
small
wheel

How does wheel and axle work?

When force is applied
to wheel, force is increased
and distance and speed are
decreased. When it is
applied to the axle, force
is decreased and distance
and speed are
increased.

What is a Pulley?
-single movablepulleysupported
by twopartsof the same rope and
has mechanical advantage of two

What are the compound of a

pulley?
-combination of fixed and a
movable pulleysforms a block and
tackle.
Block and tackle can have
several pulleysmounted
on the fixed and moving axles,
further increasing
the mechanical
advantage.

What is a Screw?
-short, slender, sharppointed metal pin with a
raised helical thread running
around it and a slotted head;
-used to join
things together

What is a Wedge?
-piece of wood, metal,
or some other material having
one thick end and tapering
to a thin edge
-driven between two
objects or parts of an
object to secure
or separate
them.

What is an inclined
plane?
-is simply a flat
surface raised at an
angle, like a ramp
-a way of lifting a load
that would be too
heavy to lift straight up

How does it work?

-The angle determines how
much effort is needed to raise
the weight. The steeper the
ramp, the more effort is
required.
