Forces

Force
What is force?
Push or Pull
Can cause the object to move (Motion- a change in
position of an object with respect to time)

1000 kg

Change the speed of an object

Change the direction of motion of an

object

Balanced v. Unbalanced Forces

If all forces are balanced there is no
acceleration in any direction.
(Either Zero Motion or Constant Velocity)

If one force is greater than the opposing

force we get acceleration in a direction.

Balanced Forces
(Balanced Forces = No Acceleration)

5N

Object

Notice that all the forces are equally pointed in

the opposite direction. Hence they balance
each other or cancel each other.

5N

Equal Pushing

Forces may cancel each other and

produce No Acceleration!

Balanced Forces
(Balanced Forces = No Acceleration)

Ground pushes up

Gravity pulls down

Gravity pulls down on you

The ground pushes back up

If these football players push

THIS KEEPS YOU WHERE YOU ARE! on each other equally as hard,
will either one move?

Unbalanced Force

Adding Forces

Subtracting Forces

Adding Forces
5N

5 N = 10 N

Two forces can add together to produce a

larger net force than either original force.
Positive Acceleration occurs (Speed up)

Unbalanced Forces
Causes Acceleration

Object

5N

Notice that all the forces are pointed in the

same direction. Hence they add together.

Subtracting Forces

10 N

= 5 N5 N

Two forces can subtract to produce a net

force in the direction of the larger force.
Negative Acceleration occurs (Slow Down)

Unbalanced Force
Causes Acceleration

Notice that all the forces are unequal and

pointed in the opposite direction. Hence they
are unbalanced and in opposition to each
other or one partially cancels the other.

object compared to a reference point.
3. __________ exerted on an object makes it
move.
4. A moving object stops when ______ is
applied to it.
5. The unit of force in the metric system is ____.

B. Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If it is not,

change the underlined words to make it correct.

1. The force that pulls things toward Earth is known as

relativity.
2. Balanced forces move an object.
3. An object moves when the force applied to it is
greater than other forces acting on it.
4. To lift an object up, the force exerted should be
equal to the force of the gravity.
5. Exerting force to an object does not always move it.
