INTRODUCTION

Masdar City

Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners.

Located to the southeast of Abu Dhabi Island around 17km from downtown
Abu Dhabi.

Total site area = 590 hectares.

Total populations = 40,000 residents.

Land use = Mixed land use .

The city will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy
sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology.

LAND USE PLAN

MASTER
PLAN

PLANNING AND DESIGN

1.Global challenge

Loss of biodiversity and exploration of natural resources

2.Goal & Strategy

Create new habitats

3.Target

All valuable species been located

Balanced land use

Consolidated open spaces

Landscaped of vegetation

THE SUSTAINABLE CITY

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

A 10MW solar photovoltaic plant is operational within Masdar City. Occupying

22 hectares within the outer boundary of Masdar City, it is the largest gridconnected solar plant in the Middle East and was connected to the Abu Dhabi
power grid in April 2009.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

In addition to solar energy, Masdar City is exploring the viability of

geothermal and solar thermal cooling technologies that use heat to run air
conditioning units.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Masdar City minimises energy consumption by developing best commercially
available international energy efficient techniques and setting stringent binsulation

TRANSPORTATION PLANNING
PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT (PRT)

Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system of 100% electricpowered, automated vehicles has been in operation
since 2010with existing road and railways connecting
to other locations outside the city.

PRT vehicles are sized for individual or small group

travel, typically carrying no more than 3 to 6
passengers per vehicle.

The PRT vehicles will travel at speeds up to 40km/h,

with the longest routes in the city taking around 10
minutes.

The innovative system reached a milestone of having

served 500,000 passengers in November 2012.

TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

The dedicated guide way in the under croft, an artificial basement created by
raising the pedestrian level, will also accommodate the Freight Rapid Transit
system (FRT).

The FRT system is capable of making 5,000 trips per day carrying the loads and
deliveries for residents, stores and hotels.

The flatbed vehicles can carry two pallets, with a maximum total payload of
1,600kg.

The vehicles will be recharged at the stations, avoiding the necessity of

additional parking space (garage). The stations feature angled berths, allowing
all vehicles independent entry and exit.

TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

Configuration : Network

Connection : Direct (Non stop)

Passenger seated/standing : 4 adults +

2 children

Drive : Electric

Track length : 1200 meters (one-way)

WATER MANAGEMENT
ISSUES

Water resource: rainwater, desalination

Rainwater: mean annual rainfall ranging between 46 and 119 millimetres,

Abu Dhabi is among the driest places in the world

Desalination: highly in cost

TECHNOLOGIES

Highly efficient irrigation systems

Smart water meters

High efficiency appliances

Strategy

WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

WASTE MANAGEMENT
STRATEGY

Minimize waste to landfill

Maximize the resource potential of materials (e.g. recycling and reuse)

Divert at least 50% of operational waste from landfill

Divert 90% of construction waste during the development period

Masdar City Unveils its First Eco-Villa.

Careful orientation of the home, optimised natural lighting, a high-performance

envelope as well as low-energy LED lighting and other design techniques will
reduce the homes annual energy demand to an estimated 39,000 KWh each year,
slightly less energy than the panels are expected to generate.

The eco-villa design would divert an estimated 63 tons of carbon dioxide

emissions from the atmosphere while reducing demand on the national electrical
grid.

The homes are expected to use 35 per cent less water than standard villas, thanks
to low-flow toilets, faucets and showers, and other innovative water conservation
measure

Masdar City Unveils its First Eco-Villa

On April 22, 2015 Masdar City, Abu Dhabis urban innovation ecosystem
launched a new concept for sustainable villas that generate enough solar
energy to power the homes year-round.

The four-bedroom villa concept includes an array of high-performance

solar panels that will generate approximately 40,000 KWh per year.

INFERENCES

The building energy and water demands are reduced by 40 per cent .

Buildings are constructed with 90 per cent recycled aluminium and lowcarbon cement, in addition to other locally-sourced and verified
materials.

Masdar City is walkable and pedestrian friendly.

Integrates a smart network of transportation options to create an

accessible, liveable community.

Designed to encourage and promote low-carbon public transportation.

Masdar City is an attractive community in which people can live, learn,

work and play.
