Thou shall

not
commit
ADULTERY

The Sixth Commandment is

recorded in Exodus 20:14:

You shall not

commit adultery.
This timeless law has never
been more relevant
thantoday.

The commandment
where people are most
susceptible today.
Our culture is so laden
with sexual immorality.

So many things are sold

with pretty faces.

The actors in the past werent so

physically attractive.

So many today, if they DONT

measure up, believe they
wont be happy, and may
commit suicide. They draw
their self worth from how they
look.
If they DO measure up, they
often get caught up in sexual
immorality, and/or become
the cause of many others

In large measure,
how we look
today will affect
what we will
become.
BUT IT

This commandment
encompasses all sexual
sins.
This commandment is
exceedingly broad.

1. FORBIDS ADULTERY
ADULTERY is where two
people who arent married treat
each other as though they are,
though one or both are married
to someone else.
If a man is found lying with a
married woman, then both of
them shall die, the man who lay
with the woman, and the

King Solomons Wives

The Bible recounts that King Solomon,
wisest of men and builder of theFirst
Temple in Jerusalem, had 700 wives
and 300 concubines. This
practice was in direct violation of
the Bible's constraint, that should a
king reign over the People of Israel, he
should not have too many horses or
too many wives.

The Bible placed limits on the number of

wives and wealth the king could have, so
that he would stay focused on his
responsibilities and not be distracted and
corrupted by materialism and power.
Solomon was certainly aware of these
prohibitions, but felt that his great
wisdom and spirituality would enable him
to handle these challenges and be an
even greater king.
It is far more feasible to imagine that the
significance of Solomon's alleged
abundance of foreign wives was not

Marriage within royalty and nobility

was a common practice for
establishing and cementing political
alliances. In Solomon's period, the
Middle East was made of many citystates and quite likely Solomon's
ingenuity enabled him to solidify so
many alliances in this way and thus
strengthen his kingdom.

The Biblical story addresses the

serious theological implications
relating to Solomon's maintaining
so many foreign wives, since
these women were considered
infidels and idol worshippers, not
of the Jewish faith, and would
have had to convert in order to
marry the king. It is evident from
the biblical account, that Solomon
was lenient with his wives'
religious practices and allowed
them to continue to practice
idolatry and worship their gods,
while living in the palace in the
holy city of Jerusalem.

"I will tear the kingdom away

from you ... But I will not do this
in your time, for the sake of your
father David. Instead, I will tear it
away from your son ... I will give
your son one tribe for the sake of
my servant David, and for the
sake of Jerusalem, which I have
chosen."

2. UNLAWFUL DIVORCE
When a married couple divorces for
unbiblical reasons, a new marriage by
either party constitutes adultery.
And He said to them, Whoever divorces
his wife and marries another woman
commits adultery against her; and if she
herself divorces her husband and marries
another man, she is committing adultery
(Mark 10:11-12).

3. FORNICATION

Fornication is where two unmarried

people act as though they are
married.
Letmarriagebe heldin honor among
all, and let the marriagebed
beundefiled; for fornicators and
adulterers God will judge (Heb. 13:4)

4. RAPE

Rape is where one person forces another to

engage in acts that are lawful only for married
persons.
But if in the field the man finds the girl who is
engaged, and the man forces her and lies with
her, then only the man who lies with her shall
die. But you shall do nothing to the girl; there
is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as
a man rises against his neighbor and murders
him, so is this case. When he found her in the
field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was
no one to save her (Deu. 22:25-27).

5. INCEST
Incest is treating someone related to you
as though you are married to them.
None of you shall approach any blood
relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am
the LORD (Lev. 18:6).

6. SODOMY

Sodomy is what we now call homosexuality.

It is two people of the same gender treating
each other as though they are married.
Ifthere isa man who lies with a male as
those who lie with a woman, both of them
have committed a detestable act; they shall
surely be put to death. Their blood
guiltiness is upon them (Lev. 20:13).

7. BESTIALITY
Treating an animal as though you are
married to it.
Also you shall not have intercourse with any
animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any
woman stand before an animal to mate with
it; it is a perversion (Lev. 18:23).
Ifthere isa woman who approaches any
animal to mate with it, you shall kill the
woman and the animal; they shall surely be
put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon
them(Lev. 20:16).

We might ask is why did Jesus use the

example of a man lusting after a
woman?

Is it because only men have this

problem?
> No. Everyone who has gone past
puberty is liable to have this
difficulty.

And what is it that is

wrong?
It is the looking at another person with
impure thoughts.
Does Jesus mean that this only
applies to married people? No. He says
everyone who looks to lust, commits this
sin. It applies to all. Everyone who looks at
another person, whether they are a man
or a woman, whether they are young or
old, with impure and sinful thoughts,
breaks this commandment.

Now this commandment is especially

appropriate in todays world. Its
interesting, isnt it, that human
nature does not really change. Jesus
is highlighting the very sins that our
world still struggles with today. As a
matter of fact, this must be one of
the greatest. Our whole culture is
driven
by sexual lust.

Remember that it not only forbids sin, but

also commands the opposite righteous
act: PURITY

Instead of adultery, faithfulness.

Instead of unlawful divorce,
covenant fidelity.
Love your own spouse.

Instead of fornication, purity.

a. Instead of rape, the protection of
others purity.
b. The same with regard to incest.
c. Sodomy, bestiality must be
repented of.
d. Along with any other unnatural
lusts.

We mustnt forget that each

command not only affects our
actions, but also our
thoughts, inclinations and words
anything that can lead up to
the act itself.

All around us, we are being tempted to

break this commandment. So what are we
to do?

Jesus tells us that we must put to death

those members of our body which cause
us to stumble. He says, And if your right
eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and
throw it from you; for it is better for you
that one of the parts of your body
perish, than for your whole body to be
thrown into hell. And if your right hand
makes you stumble, cut it off, and throw
it from you; for it is better for you that
