forceforIndonesia.Ithadformerlybeena
partofTentaraNasionalIndonesiasinceits
independence from Dutch. The police
wereformallyseparatedfromthemilitaryin
April 1999, a process which was formally
completedinJuly2000.

Indonesian Police System


The strength of the Indonesian National Police
stood at approximately 387,470 in 2011. The
national police force was formally separated
as a branch of the armed forces and placed
under the Office of the President in 1999. It
also includes 12,000 marine police and an
estimated 40,000 Peoples Security trainees
who serve as a police auxiliary and report for
threeweeksofbasictrainingeachyear.

RECRUITMENT
Police recruits were volunteers. Applicants were
requiredtohaveatleastasixth-gradeeducationandto
pass a competitive examination. Other qualifications
included physical fitness and good moral character.
After three years' service as ordinary police, personnel
with junior secondary-school diplomas could enter
training to become NCOs. Those with three years'
experienceasNCOswereeligibleforfurthertrainingto
enable them to become candidate officers and
eventually enter the officer corps. Most higher ranking
officers entered the force as graduates of the Police
DivisionofAkabri.

RECRUITMENT
Inadditiontotheothermedicalandphysicalexaminations.
Womenwhowanttobecomepolicewomenaretoundergo
avirginitytest.Policewomenmustkeeptheirvirginity.
Overall,themedicalandphysicalexaminationhastwo
mainobjectives:
*Thefirstoneistomakesurethatthecandidates'health
andphysicalconditionwillnotharmthemwhenadmitted
intopoliceforce.
*Secondly,itistomakesurethattheydonotpossessany
communicablediseasesthatwillnotallowthemtoperform
maximallyastrainedpolicepersonnel.

PROMOTION
Advancedtraininginvocationalandtechnical
subjects was available for regular police, for
NCOs, and for officers. Promotions were
often based on performance in advanced
education. The Police Command and Staff
School offered advanced training to police
officers assigned to command units at the
subdistrict, district, and Polda level. Training
therefocusedonadministrationandlogistics.

Anti Huru-Hara, Anti Riot Unit) have received

RANKS OF INP
In the early years, Polri used European
police style ranks. When the police was
included into the military structure in the
1960s, the ranks changed into military
style. When Polri conducted the transition
tobefullyindependentoutofarmedforces
structure at 2000, they use British style
police ranks. Now Polri has returned to
Dutchstyleranksjustliketheirearlyyears.
