Background and
justification
Materials are one of the main inputs to a
process and typically account for about 60% of
costs of production. Material utilization requires
the planning, directing, controlling and
coordinating the activities which are concerned
with materials and inventory requirements from
the point of their inception to their introduction
in to the manufacturing process.
cont’…
 The product and process requirements
generated at the design and development stage
are passed to the manufacturing function. These
will be used to prepare the detail work
instructions required to manufacture the product.
Lastly, these will then pass to the manufacturing
facility for execution. Therefore, although the
design and manufacturing functions are
separated, the process planning activity links
them.
Justification
 In the production companies the raw
material utilization is the essential one to
minimize the cost of production, quality
and time. In accordance to its essentiality
we are focusing our paper on material
utilization and process plan, to increase its
effectiveness and efficiency. At the
proposed area the material utilization is
some what ineffective, especially in
component and accessories store, open
raw material store, work station and
warehouse.
Problem statement
 Inefficient forecasting of the future
technology
 Long distance transportation among work
station
 High rusting of raw materials in the open
store
 Inefficient plan for raw material purchase
 High chips formation on machining
operation
 Ineffective communication with customers
Objectives of the project

General objective:
 The general objective of this paper is to improve the
material utilization and the process plan in proposed area
(MIE).

 Specific objectives
 To increase the degree of work piece utilization in the work
shop
 To examine whether the scraps and leftover of materials
are recycled to use again or not
 To reduce the cycle time of operation by combining or
eliminating certain activities
 To identify no longer salable components from accessories
and components store and to avoid them in order to
prevent high cost of inventory
Methodology
 During this project work the data gathering
techniques will be both primary and secondary data
gathering methods.

1. Primary data collection methods:

 Interviewing: the planning &monitoring department

personnel
 Questionnaires: store keepers & other workers
 Direct observation of the study area

2. Secondary data collection methods:

 Document analysis such as manuals & annual reports
 internet
Expected outcomes
 Optimum utilization of row materials
 Less deterioration of materials in the
ware house
 Minimum cycle time and cost of
operation
 To minimize material transportation
between successive work stations
Scope of the study
This project is limited to improve the
material utilization and process plan,
specifically on manufacturing
process (dry cargo semi-trailer
assembly) in MIE PLC.
