RELIGIOUS

DIVERSITY

DAVIS COUNTY AREA

By: Mauricia Mortensen
Class: Religious Diversities
Instructor: Suzanne Jacobs

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
My objective is to take a closer look at the religious diversity of
my community and compare it to the surrounding religious
landscape. I am hoping to gain a greater understanding of the
religious cultures in my community through personal
experience. Then present my findings in an electronic file, and
publish the file to my personal e-portfolio.

Davis County, UT
634mi.

Unfortunately, I was not
able to find any

FROM GRACE
BAPTIST TO
BOUNTIFUL
HEIGHTS
About 12 years ago a church of 63
members, called Grace Baptist
Church, was struggling in Bountiful,
UT. Their pastor stopped caring
about his congregation and decided
to leave.
Grace thought they could continue
on their own, and purchased an old
building on the corner of 400 N. and
400 E. for $180,000. The church
borrowed $5,000 to complete some
renovations, but still struggled. After
a year of trials and losing 1/3 of
their members, Grace decided they
needed help.

BOUNTIFUL
HEIGHTS
CHURCH

Grace reached out to Washington Heights

Baptist Church of Ogden to see if they
were willing to take on a campus model,
and take over their church. Bountiful
Heights was born!
I spoke with Pastor Josh and learned that
he was brought in from Chicago 3 years
ago to take over the Bountiful campus.

Currently 200 families attend their 2

Sunday services.

The kids (under age 10) ministry

serves over 50 children each week.

Youth (ages 10-17) groups are offered

Sundays and Wednesday evenings.
Approximately 20 kids attend on a
regular basis.

Bible Study is available each week,

and Small Groups meet twice a
month.

FROM BOUNTIFUL
HEIGHTS TO
FLOURISHING
GRACE CHURCH
Bountiful Heights is flourishing
into a successful self-sufficient
church. With all the recent
growth and success, Bountiful
Heights has decided to become
an independent church again and
is leaving the Heights
Community.
Effective January 1, 2017,
Bountiful Heights will become
Flourishing Grace Church.
All services, groups, and
ministries will still be offered
along with the new things they
have planned.

THE BRIDGE
COMMUNITY
CHURCH
Pastor Loren moved to Utah in 2010
with the intent of starting a church.
Loren reached out to Converge Rocky
Mountain, a strategic network of
churches, and planted The Bridge
Community!

The Bridge Community has been

serving the Davis County area since
2010.

Two Sunday Worship services are

offered (9:15 and 11:00)

Currently there are about 45 regular

families that attend.

Approximately 35 children are in

the Childrens ministry.

NATIONAL COMPARISON
CHRISTIAN

According to Pew Research Centers

New Religious Landscape Study

(2014), the number of Christians is
declining! Pew Research conducted a
similar study in 2007, when 78.4%
(178 million) of US adults identified
as Christian. In 2014 that number
dropped to 70.6% (173 million).
Pew credits the declination of

Christians to the increased number

of Americans with no religious
preference.
10

NATIONAL COMPARISON
NON-CHRISTIAN

According to the same Pew Research

Center New Religious Landscape Study

(2014), the number of Americans who
follow the non-Christian faiths has grown.
Jumping from 4.7% in 2007 to 5.9% in
2014.
The Muslim community jumped from 0.4%

in 2007 to 0.9% in 2014.

The Hundu population also grew from

0.4% in 2007 to 0.7% in 2014.

11

CONCLUSION
I expanded my research area to all of Davis County rather than the 3-5 mile
radius of where I live, because I had a pretty good idea of how narrow the
diversity really was. I was still surprised to see that even after I expanded
my research area, there wasnt much variation.
Living in Utah, we know that a large percentage of our total population
identifies as being LDS, however I did not realize how small the minority
populations really were. In many cases, there werent any locations to
represent a certain population.
Making up approximately 60% of Utahs general population, it is clear that
the LDS faith is very present.
