Oil Boom

Repatriation
of Petrodollars

Most countries have entered WTO

Many are negotiating FTAs with US

GAFTA and Euro-Med Partnership are progressing

Governments encouraging private sector development

attracting expatriate workers to the region

Young growing population - over 50% of the

population is less than 20 years old

Worldwide demand surged and ME is a major supplier

Oil prices have reached over US$100 per barrel

Oil & Gas exports account for as much as 60% of

GDP

As a result, governments have large surpluses

In the past, petrodollars used to buy Western assets

Today, petrodollars are being invested regionally

Ground-Mounted System

Planned to be 50 % Crystalline/50 % Thin Film

Land Area for solar plant = about 200,000 sq meters (46 Acres)

Largest PV Plant in the Mid-east

To be on-line by the end of February, 2009

Possibly could be moved to rooftops in 5 to 6 years

Other Solar Projects

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) - We are working with several
developer and technologies for projects in the Southwest:

37

Confidential Client
Developed a sustainability plan for
one of our corporate clients
Conducted energy audits at over 200
over their sites
Helped develop a renewable energy
plant
First pilot on one of their office
buildings in California
1 MW roof-mounted system
CH2M HILL Role

City of San Jose

CH2M HILL is the Program Manager for the Solar America Cities
Program
Provides technical assistance to cities regarding solar designs,
training, outreach, codes and standards and other program
implementation
First Round = 13 cities This year added 12 more cities
City of San Jose wanted solar site assessments and design
concepts for 8 sites
CH2M HILL team surveyed sites and provided detailed
engineering assessments and economic analyses for each site
San Jose wants to do detailed drawings and bid documents in
next phase
40

Examples of Sites:

Shading Analysis

43

Lessons Learned

Texas should build a Zero

Carbon Development or City
Could serve as an example
and inspire innovation. Will
help keep technology in the
US
It is really difficult to build a
zero carbon city
Difficult to balance baseload
and peaking generation

Oct 5, 2016

p44

44

Lessons Learned

Need a committed funding

source and committed team
Everyone needs to be
committed to the project
Training starts at the ground
level workers, contractors
Account for all carbon even
imbedded uses
Need to study PV heat island
effect
Biggest problem for PV will be
dust build-up
Oct 5, 2016

p45

45

Lessons Learned

Combination of centralized
and distributed generation
Sometimes what looks great
in architectural renders
engineering nightmares
Takes a lot of planning
discussion and patience
Need to do a detailed
resource plan and analysis
before determining project
goals for renewables
Oct 5, 2016

p46

46

What we need in Texas

Public/private commitment
and funding partnership to do
bold projects that benefit local
economy and keep jobs and
technology in the state
Incentives for financing
(banks) institutions to fund
centralized and distributed
renewables
Major commitment to
renewable and carbon free
education program

NEEDS

NEED GOOD ENGINEERS TO HELP SHAPE OUR ENERGY

FUTURE..In new innovative ways!
