CLASS VISIT

Content & Procedures

Nervous? Dont be.


You know the Writing Center and what we do.
You know the content.
They are not judging you, and many are actually
very open to what you have to say.
Its okay to pull in personal experience. Have you
had a good session/bad session? Use the Writing
Center yourself? Make use of that.
It will be okay! No need to stress. This guide
has all the information you need to make
your class visit the best it can be.

Need-to-know:
You are likely the first face they are
seeing from the Writing Center Its
important to be friendly and polite.
Smile!
For many students, this is the first and
only exposure they have had to the
Writing Center Make sure that they
have the bare minimum knowledge
of what we do.

What to wear:
We are semi-professional in what we do,
so semi-professional dress code is
required.
There is one slide dedicated to this,
so keep it in mind!

Before the class visit:


If you have any questions for the
professor, email them at least 2 days
prior your CV. Remember to CC the
writing center email.
We do not meet with professors face-toface for security reasons. Any
communication needs to be by phone or
email.
Make sure you are familiar with the KU
Writing Center website and its
resources for students.

General Information:
Ask how many people have used the Writing
Center.
Explain what the Writing Center is: We help
students develop their writing skills at any
stage of the writing process, from an idea to a
final draft. Whether youre working on an
assignment for class or applications for
scholarships, jobs, or schools, know that we are
your writing resource at KU. Obviously, you
dont have to say this verbatim, but you
get the idea.

Who we are and what we do:


Were Graduate or Undergraduatepeer
consultantstrained in writing
consultations.
Were not here to evaluate or grade your
writing.
Were here to coach you so you can
become a better writer.
Were here can work with personal
writing projects too!

Events (if theres one coming up)
Brieflyexplain what those are.

To WC Online
Go from our website to WC Online by clicking
Schedule an Appointment
Ask if one of them (who is not registered) wants to
volunteer. If no one wants, just explain how it will work
and log in to the Writing Center account or your own.
Explain the color system and then show them how to
switch schedules.
As you do that, explainwhat each appointment type
is.
Make sure they know that if they schedule a Grad
appointment it will be canceled.

Face-to-Face:
40 minutes long
Anschutz from 10-5; Watson from 5-8
What a typical Face-to-face consultation
look like?

E-tutoring and Online


E-tutoring:
Submit the paper to the system and in 40 minutes you
get feedback(show them how)
How to add a file (at the time of the appointment and
after the appointment wascreated.) show them how

Online consultations:
Skype-like conversation/chat(show them how to start)
Feel free to have some fun here, like: You can be
chilling on your bed on your PJs and still have a
consultation.
Be creative!

Adding Flair:
Have fun! You can share some stories
about the WC or show some pictures on
our website, or
Talk up our events! Late Night @ the
Roost
Show our social media (Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram and Youtube)

Closing it out:
Close with something like We hope to
see you at the Writing Center! Thank you
for having me.
