In this presentation I will be discussing the different areas of
music representation, so the main areas of focus for this
animation are;
Locations

Gender

Age

Costume

Class

Ethnicity

London location
Many music videos that have been shown in London are normally
busy, although the scenery is depressing because the whether is
always rainy, foggy and cloudy from this it creates a dull, sad mood,
a example of a video that shows the morbid side of London is Ed
Sheeran- A Team. The video of A Team by Ed Sheeran shows the
homeless side of London, the music video has a black and white
effect over the whole video and this creates dreary and hopeless
mood as there's no colour to look at. In the video the video shows a
girl homeless who sleeps on a park bench this displays the poverty
side of London city, not only this but because London is popular with
shops the woman sits outside shops to hopefully gain money as
people pass by because they go in shops to spend money and they
may feel abit of guilt towards a homeless girl sat outside. Although
towards the end because the girl is desperate for money she
silicate's herself to get drugs and forget about everything.

Berlin location
In music videos that are set in Berlin they show a wide range of
establishing shots of the buildings to show the historical city and
how it contrasts to the young people and how they like to party.
Berlin music videos are great for cultural diversity this is because
when the Berlin wall was knocked down it brought back freedom as
it separated Germany from Berlin. A example of a music Video in
Berlin is Prayer C- Lilly Wood & The Prick ft Robin Schulz, this video
shows freedom and the cultural diversity because the video shows
many angles of the historical yet modern buildings as there's a lot of
graffiti on the walls and this shows how artistic yet free Berlin is.

Miami location
Miami music videos normally represent wealth and good
weather this is because in most of the Miami music videos
there's always the artist who likes to show off their money
with yachts, mansions, boat partys, night clubs ect.
Although you can tell the weather is warm because you see
most of the woman half dressed in bikinis or short dresses,
and you can tell the men are rich because most of the men
surprisingly wear expensive suits that are fitted perfectly. A
example of a music video thats set in Miami is pitbulls song
Hotel Room Service, in this song Pitbul wears a expensive
suit in a lavish and luxury Hotel showing that he is wealthy.
As well as this some songs that are set in Miami are party
anthems and this is because the setting looks more fun and
Miami is known for being upbeat and having good vibes.

Ibiza location
Music videos in Ibiza normally show the free youthful life as the music videos
in Ibiza are upbeat, as well as this Ibiza is always seen as a party island
where people get drunk and have fun. The typical Ibiza music video content
shows;

Beach

Sun

Alcohol

Women

Rave

Dance

Parties

Drugs

Money

wealth
A example of a music video thats video in Ibiza is I took a pill in Ibiza by
Mike Posners. In this video you can just see clubs, sex and drugs. This is a
bad representation for young viewers because it shows that people who go to
Ibiza only care about having sex, alcohol and drugs because the video shows
someone taking a pill.

Mansions location
Music videos with the location of Mansions normally represent wealth
and party's, my reason for this is because a mansion is bigger than a
ordinary house. Although only people who have mansion or are either
wealthy,
come from a wealthy family,
worked there wealth for themselves or inherited the mansion.
Some examples of music videos representing mansions are;
Taylor swift- 'Blank Space' ( In this video it shows Taylor wearing a
long dress swaying in ballrooms with other people, it also shows Taylor
eating dinner on a large dining table. This indicates wealth and
fortune)
One direction- Best song ever ( dance around having a party show
immaturity and the youth.)

Age
Music videos represent age in different ways because there's
different age groups music videos can represent, for
example young children are shown wearing childish clothing
and they are normally surrounded by toys this shows how
children like to play and bring there imagination to life when
playing. Although in contrast with this there is a stereotype
for the older generation as they're shown being boring, dull
as they're sometimes fragile to do extreme activities in
videos such as dancing, they normally wear woolly clothing
as they dont really care about fashion but they care more
about being comfortable in what they're wearing. However
teenager's in music videos are more seen as rebellious as
they like to live freely and do what they want.

Gender

Males and females

In music videos males are usually represented as the dominant
figure as they always have a perfect body and they're always shown
as the stronger gender. Although females like to embrace there
sexuality but from this they're seen as sex objects. Women also like
to use sex as a weapon because they're not comfortable with who
they truly are. Some example of gender being represented in music
videos are;
Im A Slave 4 U by (Britney Spears)- gender is represented in this
video because Britany is portraying herself as a sex object as she's
shown touching herself in most of the video and she's wearing
underwear throughout the video.
Drunk in Love by (Beyonc) the female gender is represented in this
music video as Beyonc is grinding on the beach floor this shows how
woman like to express there sexuality.
'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj this represents gender as its showing
women twerking showing off their sexuality.

Costumes
Costumes are represented in music videos because in a typical rap video
you'd expect to see baggy clothes and chains because they show wealth
and and the gangster stereotype. Costume is also shown in a music
video as you'd expect to see younger people wearing quite revealing
clothing as they like to be fashionable. For example girls like to show off
their assets by wearing crop tops or mini skirts.
As well as this costume depends on the location for example if a music
video is set in Ibiza the costume of girls will be bikinis, dresses and boys
wear shorts.

Class
Class is represented in music videos because upper class is
shown with bigger houses and fancy cars and designer
clothes, whereas lower class would be shown with homeless
people who use drugs and live in small houses without any
fancy clothes. In music videos its uncommon for lower class
to be represented although a example of a music video that
shows lower class is; Ed Sheeren-'A-Team'. This A-Team
music video shows a homeless girl who struggles to get by
and she prostitutes herself to get money and drugs. Despite
this working class aren't exactly shown in music videos as
they can afford necessities and this doesn't really draw a
audiences attention when in a video.

Ethnicity
A example of how ethnicity is shown in music videos is;
Macklemore-'Thrift shop'( this music video doesn't really show the rich side
of society as it shows the material side. Another example of a ethnicity
music video is;
Iggy Azalea-' Black Widower' ( In this video it shows a Asian mom and this
shows the cultural side of a music video)
Despite this there's also examples of how the black ethnicity is represented in
a music video and these are shown below. Although in one of the following
videos the white race is also featured in the music video;
Love this town by Dizzie Rascal ft. Teddy Sky
Walk This Way by Aerosmith and Run DMC (Features white people as well
as black because the black people are trying to break down the wall thats
separating the white people from the black. From this you can see the
contrast music to them.)
Vanilla Ice by Ice, Ice Baby (this is a hip hop song, the black people are
dancing in a derelict building to resemble the street side of a city but white
people are also involved in the dancing and rapping scenes)
