What is a regulation in sport?

A regulation in sport is a set of guidelines that make the sport run
the same in different venues and places.
They are things such as:
The equipment
Size of the playing area
Playing surfaces
Number of players
Time of the game
Officials
Health and safety

The equipment
What
equipment do
you need
when playing
rounders?

There are different types of balls that you can play with
depending on the type of game you are playing. A softy
ball is used when practicing as it is softer to catch. A
harder ball is used for a professional game.
A rounders bat is traditionally made of wood but can be
metal also. They have a rubber grip on the handle to stop
you dropping it.
You have 4 posts and bases that are what you run around
when playing. The posts are white and made of work.
They are usually approximately 1.5m in height.

CLOTHING
The two teams should were suitable clothing such as shorts
and t-shirt.
They do not need to be different colours to each other but
teams tend to have their own team kit. This is because one
team will be batting while the other is fielding.
Studded boots can be worn if they are playing in wet
conditions.

THE PITCH

THE PITCH
Rounders is played on the grass pitch. It is important that the grass
is cut short so that the lines can be seen. You can play on different
surfaces or indoors but not in a professional game.
The pitch is laid, from the batters square to 1st post, 1st to 2nd post
and 2nd to 3rd post is 12m.
There is a shorter distance between 3rd and 4th 8.5m.
There are two squares, one for the batter and one for the bowler.
There is also a long time that runs through the front of the batting
square and this shows whether it is a backwards hit or not.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS
The game is played between two teams.
Each team can have a maximum of 15
players but only 9 of them can play on the
field at a time.
You can not play with less than 6 players on
A team can be mixed, you can have males
the field.
females playing on the same team but no
more than 5 males can play at a time
Teams must have the same number of
fielders/batters as each other.

TIMINGS
The game is not timed and can go on for as long as needed.
The game can be played for the number of players that are out
or the number of good bowls.
Once all the players are out and there is no one to bat the
innings is over and they change over.
Once all the good bowls are bowled and the batters turn is over
the innings is finished.

OFFICIALS
There are 2 officials in a game of
rounders.
They have a clipboard each, a score
sheet and a pencil/pen.
One stands behind 2nd post
One stands on the batters line to the
right of the batters square.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Rounders is a relatively safe game as it is non-contact
Players should follow the health and safety guidelines:
Fielders must stand on the inside of the post and
away from the running area
Batters must take the bat with them when running.
The bat has a grip on it to stop it slipping out of the
batters hand.
Batters must wait to the side in the battering area
to wait their turn
Players need to be watching the game and paying
attention.
Studded boots can be worn in wet conditions
Have a first aider and first aid kit at the game
Players should warm up before playing the game

What is the aim of the game of rounders? How do

you win the game?
The aim of the game is to score more rounders than the
other team. There are many different ways to score
rounders and half rounders when it is your teams
innings (when you are batting).

WAYS TO SCORE:
1 Rounder if ball is hit and 4th post is reached and touched before next ball is bowled
1 Rounder if ball is hit and 4th post reached on a no ball (you cant be caught out)
Rounder if the ball is hit and 2nd or 3rd post reached and touched before next ball is
bowled - but if you continue this run and are put out before reaching 4th post, the score
will be taken away.
Rounder if 4th post is reached without hitting the ball
Penalty Rounder for an obstruction by a fielder
Penalty rounder for 2 consecutive no balls to same batter
1 Rounder for a backward hit if 4th post reached (you stay at 1st while ball is in the

THE RULES OF
ROUNDERS
1A.1 Describe the rules, regulations and scoring systems of a selected sport.
2A.P1 Describe the rules, regulations and scoring systems of two selected sports.
2A.M1 For each of two selected sports, explain the role and responsibilities of officials
and the application of rules, regulations and scoring systems.
2A.D1 Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of officials from two selected
sports, suggesting valid recommendations for improvement to the application of rules,
regulations and scoring systems for each sport.

BATTING RULES:
1. A batter must wait in the backward area well
away from 4th post
2. If a batter is out, wait in the backward area well
away from 1st post
3. A batter must run if you have one good ball
bowled to you
4. If a no ball is bowled at the batter
5. A batter can run on a no ball, but once you reach 1st post you cannot
return. You cannot be caught out and you score in the normal way.

RUNNING RULES:
1. If the runner stops at a post, they must keep contact with the post, with hand or bat. If they dont the fielding side
can stump the following post to put you out.
2. The runner can run on to a post even if it has been previously stumped (you dont score if the post immediately
ahead has been stumped)
3. When the bowler has the ball in the square the runner cannot move on, but if the bowler is between posts the
runner can carry on to the next.
4. The batting team cannot have two batters at a post. The Umpire will ask the first to run on when the second one
makes contact.
5. At a post the runner does not have to move on for every ball bowled.
6. Once in contact with the post, the runner may turn the corner over the 2 metre line. If they turn the corner during a
run and there is no contact with the post they will have been deemed to have turned the corner and must run on.
7. The runner can move on as soon as the ball leaves the Bowlers hand, including no balls.
8. The batter must touch 4th post on getting home.

FIELDING RULES:
1. The bowler must bowl the ball while in the bowling square.
2. The bowler must bowl in one fluid motion and underarm.
3. The ball must be bowled above the batters knee and below the batters head or wide of the
batting box.
4. The bowler must not hit the body of the batter and must be bowled to the side the batters
bat is.
5. The fielders must stand inside outside the playing pitch and not obstruct the runners.
6. If a fielder is on the post they need to stand inside the playing pitch
7. The fielder must have the ball in their hand to touch the post to get a player out.

GETTING OUT:
1. Caught this means if the batter hits the ball and a fielder catches the ball before it hits the floor
2. Foot over front/back line of batting square before hitting or missing a good ball
3. Running inside post (unless obstructed)
4. The post the batter is running to is stumped
5. The batter loses contact with post during bowlers action when they have possession in the square and
the post is stumped.
6. The batter overtakes another runner
7. The batter obstructs (you have right of way on track only)
8. The batter deliberately throws the bat
9. Side out or game over
10. If ordered to make and maintain contact with the post and refuse to do so.

SCENARIOS
1A.2 Apply the rules of a selected sport in two given
specific situations.
2A. P2 Apply the rules of a selected sport in four
specific situations.

SCENARIOS:
Level 1:
Select any two rules that you have gone through, try and select them
from different areas batting, running, fielding or getting out.
Apply the rule to a situation in the game and write how the umpire would
deal with the situation and what would have.

Example:
Scenario: A batter hits the ball after a good bowl
and the ball is caught by a fielder.
Action: The umpire would shout out.

SCENARIOS:

Level 2:

Select any four rules that you have gone through, try and select them from
different areas batting, running, fielding or getting out.
Describe a specific situation in the game and apply the rule to this situation in
the game. Try and challenge yourself by selecting more complex rules. Write
how the umpire would deal with the situation and what would have.
Example:
Scenario: A batter steps into the batting box, the bowler bowls the ball but it
does over the batters head. The next bowl is bowled and it goes below the
batters knee.
Action: The umpire standing to the right of the batter would call a no ball each
time the bowler had bowled. When they had bowled the second, call no ball,
half a rounder awarded.
