What is Humanities?
Humanities

came from the Latin word


Humanus, it is the study of how humans
have expressed themselves through the arts
throughout the history.

humanus which means to be human.

To

be human means to show qualities like


rationality, kindness or tenderness.

It

is the branch of knowledge concerned


with human thought, feelings and relations.

also means human, cultured


and refined.

emphasize the dignity of man


and recognize creative expressions.

Humanities

are records of Mans


experiences, his values, his sentiments,
his ideals and his goals.

They are ultimately the expression of


mans feelings and thoughts.

It helps us recognize fundamental values and principles


such as beauty, truth, love, and faith.

It develops our capacity for critical thinking and


appreciation for cultural heritage.

It fosters understanding across barriers of race, class,


gender, or ethnicity.

It introduces us to people we have never met, places we


have never visited, and ideas that never crossed our minds.

To appraise the value of creativity.

The

term arts is derived from the Latin,


ars meaning ability or skill.

Arts

may also be defined as the process


and product of a skillful making.

It

is the result of mans manipulation of


talents and materials.

Major

Arts. These include architecture,

painting, sculpture, music, dance, theater,


literature and cinema.
Minor

Arts. These include decorative arts,

popular arts, graphic arts, plastic arts and


industrial arts.

Visual

Arts- Artworks that are perceived by our


eyes, which may be classified into graphic and
plastic arts.
Graphic

arts- have two-flat dimensional surface,


such as painting, drawing, photography and other
products of printing industry.
Plastic Arts - have three- dimensional forms.
Examples are architectural designs and construction
of buildings and other structures: landscape of
gardens, furnishing designs etc.

Arts- These include the


theater, play, dance, and music. It
involves movement, speaking and
gestures.

hobby horse.

works aims to capture the speed and


force of modern industrial society and to
glorify the mechanical energy of modern
life.

Surrealism
It

tries to reveal a new and higher reality


than that of daily life. They claim to create
a magical world more beautiful than the
real one through art.

Uses

art as a weapon against evil and


restrictions that surrealist see in society.

It

came from the slang of super realism.

The

emotional expressions in
expressionistic paintings could be described
