Review: So what is Calculus?

 For those who have grown so used to

Calculus that they have forgotten its
original purpose..
 It is basically taking the hardest approach
possible to solve for or calculate
something simple.
Review: So what is Calculus?

Basic Math Concepts Calculus Approaches

 Slope  Derivatives
 Area  Integrals
 Volume  Cross sections
The Purpose of this Project

 To find the volume of a “small”

rhombihexahedron.
 What is it? [See picture in next slide]
 It is a concave, “uniform” polyhedral solid
 about 96 faces and ..
 too many sides to count >_<”
 Why am I finding the volume of this?
 I assumed it would be easier (and harder at
the same time) to find the volume of than a
regular dodecahedron

Finding the Volume
The Calculus Way!
To Find the Volume

 Because this
polyhedron is a bit
complicated with its
mess of holes and all,
we will use multiple
cross-sectioned
integrals to gradually
solve for the desired
volume calculation.
To Find the Volume
 Let the length of the
side of each little
square be one unit
long.
 Break the small
rhombihexahedron
apart!
 Figure out what
prisms or
polyhedrons the small
rhombihexahed-ron is
composed of.
Breaking the Polyhedron
Apart
 When we split the small rhombihexahedron
into 27 little parts (in the same way one can
extract 27 mini cubes from a large cube), we
find that this polyhedron is composed of
 12 isosceles triangular prisms
 8 hollow spaces
 6 more hollow spaces
 1 cube
 Total = 27 parts
 So all we need to do is find the volumes of
the cube and the triangular prisms using
calculus!
To Find the Volume

1. Find the volume of

the parts using
calculus y
a. Find the volume of
the cube unit
b. Find the volume of a o y
triangular prism unit x o
x
2. Add the calculated
volumes
3. Check work =]
Calculations
And the volume is ...
[ Drum roll, please]
Final Calculations

 Volume of the small rhombihexahedron:

 12 V triangular prism + V cube
 12(0.5 unit3) + 1 unit3
 6 units3 + 1 unit3
 7 units3
 Now that we know the volume of a small
rhombihexahedron with the length of
each side of a cube or leg of an isosceles
right triangle being 1 unit, we can now
make a formula
Formula for the Volume of a
Small Rhombihexahedron:
 Volume = 7s
 Let s = the length of each side of a cube
 Or leg of an isosceles right triangle

 Ex. The actual length of one side of the

polyhedral model I made is 1.375 inches.
 Volume(1.375) = 7(1.375 in.)
 = 9.625 in.3
