THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SECOND

HAND SMOKE AND LOW BIRTH WEIGHT


and PRETERM DELIVERY.

The researcher research about the relation between second hand


smoke (SHS) or passive smoker with low birth weight (less then
2500 gram) and preterm delivery (more then 40 weeks).

The researchers do this condit research is to make


sure the association between high risk to SHS and low
birth weight and preterm delivery. SHS is someone
who didnt smoke but they get the effect of smoke,
we called passive smoker. Low birth weight is a
condition when new born baby weight is less then
2500 gram. Preterm delivery is late delivery or a baby
who born more then 40 weeks prgnancy. This study
used four main hospital in the north of Jordan, it was
about 8.490 women whodelivered in this four hospital
between april 2007 until september 2007. The women
were include active and passive smoker. Beside it the
researcher used data about maternal
background,obstetric history, anddata that related to
SHS. In over all 13.8 % of women gave preterm
delivery and 10.0% of women ave birthto a low birth
weight. About 12.6% of women who related with SHS
delivered low birth weight compare 7.7% for non
related women. The rate of preterm delivery for
women who related SHS is significanly high compared
non related SHS. About 17.2% vs 10.6%). Accroding to
the research the researcher sure that SHS could affect
preterm delivery and low birth weight. Health care
profesional need to carry out Comunication,
Information and Education to increase awareness and
understanding of pregnant women and their husband
about the harmful effectof SHS on birth outcome.

Second Hand Smoke (SHS) has
harmfull impacts on health, include
reproductive health exspecialy
birthoutcome. Because nicotine and
carbon monoxide decrease oxygen
for the fetus. It will obstruct fetal
tisue oxygnation.
Smoking in pregnancy is related with
many complication between mother
and newborn including fetal growth
retriction, spontaneous abortion,
pretern delivery, sudden infant
death (SID) syndrome with high
prenatal mortality and morbidity.
In this study researchers focus on
the effect of SHS during pregnancy
on low birth weight and preterm
delivery.

METHODS
The researcher used cross-sectional
study . They used data from four
main hospital in the north of Jordan,
like : Princess Badeah
hospital,Jaresh hospital, Al-Eman
hospital, Al-Ramtha hospital. The
total number of four hospital
delivery is 15.712 in 2007, about
8.490 woman was reported has
accociation with smoke or became
Second Hand Smoke (SHS). All
women agreed to participated with
the study by verbal consent at the
time of data collection.
They collected the data in 24 hours
after delivery, the mother
answered the plot quastion.

Result
Accroding to the data
Low BirthWeight and
Preterm has accociation
with SHS. Researchers
found that 13.8 % of
women gave birth to a
preterm baby and 10.0 %
gave birth to a low birth
weight baby. About 12.6
of women who related
with SHS gave a low birth
weight compared nonrelated 7.7%.
