FEW Ways to Learn Spelling Skills

Using a dictionary to aid spelling
Write down the ways you think the word might

be spelled and begin checking in the dictionary

from the one that looks the most right.

If you use a computer to write: give your best

guess at spelling and see what spelling checker

suggests.
-It's always a good idea to confirm with a
dictionary that the suggested word is actually
what the you wanted.

Learning a prescribed set of vocabulary
words

Using contextual clues

One of the ways to understand text is by

using contextual clues.

So what is contextual clues?

Context clues
Context clues are hints that an author

gives to help define a difficult or unusual

word.
The clue may appear within the same
sentence as the word to which it refers, or
it may follow in a preceding sentence.

Because most of one's vocabulary is gained

through reading, it is important that you be

able to recognize and take advantage of
context clues.

Using contextual clues

When you read, sometimes, you will find a

word @ few words that you dont

understand.
This is especially when you deal with the
different texts & different level of text
difficulties.

You can use dictionary to get those

meanings.
However, in reading, you can
use the technique of
guessing to get the
meaning of the difficult words.

How to guess?

Looking at the other words in the same

passage.
Looking at the sentences that come
before and after.
Looking at the other word stated in
another way in the passage.

Here are some of the ways to use the

contextual clues and guess the meaning
of difficult words
GENERAL MEANING

CONTRAST VS. OPPOSITE

ILLUSTRATION

There are at least four kinds

of context clues that are quite
common.
1) a synonym (or repeat context clue)

which appears in that sentence;

2) an antonym (or contrast context
clue) that has the opposite meaning, which
can reveal the meaning of an unknown
term;

3) an explanation for an unknown word is

given (a definition context clue) within

the sentence or in the sentence
immediately preceding; and
4) specific examples (an example
context clue) used to define the term.

There may also be word-part context

clues in which a common prefix, suffix, or

root will suggest at least part of the
meaning of a word.
E.g.- readability, contextualization, prematurity

A general sense context clue lets the

reader puzzle out a word meaning from

whatever information is available - and this
is the most common kind of context clue.

E.g.-DHA is very essential for children

brain development.

Suffixes / Prefixes
Addition

Using prefixes, roots and

suffixes
Many words are made up of a root (or base

word) and a prefix.

Some words also have a suffix.
For example, the root word port means to
carry or to bear.
Attach the prefix ex, meaning out or out of,
and you have the word export, to carry
out.

Attach the prefix im, meaning in or into and

you have import, to carry in.

Attach the prefix trans, meaning across, and
you have transport, meaning to carry across.
Now let's attach the suffix able, meaning able
to be, and you have importable,
exportable, and transportable.

Example

Is the longest English word in the

world.
According to the Oxford English
Dictionary, "a factitious word alleged to
mean 'a lung disease caused by the
inhalation of very fine silica dust,
causing inflammation in the lungs.
