U-Net Overview
It is a scalable and flexible multi-technology network design and optimization platform that
supports wireless operators throughout the network lifecycle, from initial design to
densification and optimization. It can be used to plan radio networks and microwave links.
Complete support for GSM/GRPS/EDGE, UMTS/HSPA, CDMA2000 1xRTT/EV-DO, LTE,
TD-SCDMA, WiMAX/BWA (802.16d & 802.16e) technologies.
Realize mobility of planning design, supporting a wide range of project applications: single
system and Enterprise server-based network configuration. The single system version does
not require connecting external database and users can still share engineering data.
With modern software interface as well as open and extendable platform. Also, it is easy to
install, operate, tune models and generate reports.

Creation of a New Project

There are two ways to create a New Project in Atoll: From a Template or From a Database.
For this case, we use a Document Template.
There are various templates: GSM, CDMA2000, WiMAX, LTE, UMTS, etc. We choose the
UMTS HSPA Template for this Project.

Visualization of the New Project

This a general view of a New Project. In the right side, there is the
workspace or document window (Map)
While in the left side, there are the Event Viewer and the Explorer
window that has 3 tabs: Data Tab, Geo Tab & Modules Tab.

Page 7

Setting the Coordinates System

The next step is to set the Coordinates System for the Project. The most used is the
Universal Transverse Mercator Projection (UTM with WGS 84).
In this system, our country is divided in three zones (17S, 18S, 19S) The current Project is
for Lima which is located in the 18S zone.
Also, we have to define the Display mode. For this case, we choose the Longitude / Latitude
Projection (the most common)

Importing Geo Data Files (Height)

We need to import three Geo Data Files: Heights

(Altitudes), Clutters (Classes) and Vectors (Optional)
The Heights Data (DTM) represents the height above sea
level in meters for a square area. It directly participate in
the radio propagation model calculation.
It is required a Height Database with the following files:
index.txt and projection.txt

Page 10

Importing Geo Data Files (Clutter)

The Clutter Data (DLU) contains a code corresponding to

a category of land usage for a square area, such as
forest, lake, open area, industrial area, urban area. It is
used for the calculation of radio propagation path loss.
Also, it is required a Clutter Database with the following
files: index.txt and projection.txt

Creation of New Sites

In this tab, We can put the
coordinates of the site
and also the real altitude
(its not necessary)

In the next tab, there are

default values for the
equipment of the site (its
not required to modify)

Modify Properties of the Sites

In this part, We can modify

the general properties of
the sites, for example: to
add a new field in the Table.

Importing New Sites

Also, we can import

the sites from a File
(.csv or .txt) but its
necessary to have
the same fields.

Page 17

Visualization of Sites

We can modify the display

mode of the sites, for
example: to change the
Label, the Font, etc.

The next step is to define the

transmitters, but first we need
to recreate the Antennas and
the parameters.

the Antenna, one for each
tilt and frequency.

The next step is to define
the Cells. By default, only
one cell is assigned to
each transmitter.

Properties of Transmitters

In this tab, we can set the

type of antenna according
to the real tilt in the sector.

In this tab, we can set the

Propagation model, radius and
resolution for the simulation.

For the propagation model, we choose the Standard Propagation

Model (SPM) which is more suitable for cellular predictions.

Standard Propagation Model (SPM)

For a real prediction of the coverage, we

need to set the losses due to clutter and to
calibrate the Model with the Drive Test data.

Filtering CW Measurements
We can filter the points
in order to get more
accurate data.

Here, we set the values for the filtering:

Min & Max distance, Min & Max RSCP
Level, Angle of Horizontal Bandwidth (to
avoid reflections and others)

Prediction for a New Site

For the prediction of a new site, we need the DT Data of

near sites with azimuth in the same direction of the site.
In this case, for the New Site, LIU0075 Misionero, we
required Data of seven sectors around the new Node B.

Creation of New Transmitters

We create the transmitters directly in the Table, based on

the others imported previously. Here we put the real values
of Height, Azimuth & Tilts. Also, we can activate it.
In the same way, we create the cells associated to each
transmitter in their respective table.
After, in the properties of each new transmitter, we need to
set the new propagation model with its radio and resolution
