Introduction
Engineering is the profession involved in designing,
manufacturing, constructing, and maintaining of products,
systems, and structures.

at is Reverse Engineerin
?
The term Reverse Engineering includes any activity you do
to determine how a product works or to learn the ideas and
technology that were originally used to develop the product.
This Reverse Engineering is a systematic approach for
analyzing the design of existing devices or system.

Concept of Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is the process of discovering the
technological principles of a device, object or system through
analysis of its structure, function and operation.
The concept behind Reverse Engineering is breaking
something down in order to understand it, build a copy or
improve it.
Reverse Engineering enables the duplication of an existing
part by capturing the components physical dimensions,
features and material properties.

Concept of Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is typically cost effective only if the
items to be reverse engineered reflects a high investment or
will be reproduced in large quantities.
It can be said that Reverse Engineering begins with product
and works through the design process in the opposite direction
to arrive at a product definition statement (PDS).

NEED FOR REVERSE ENGINEERING

Military or commercial intelligence- learning about an
enemys or competitors' latest research by stealing or
capturing a prototype or dismantling it. It may result in
development of similar product.
Improve documentation shortcomings- Reverse Engineering
can be done, when the original designers are not available to
improve it.
Product security analysis: to examine how a product works,
what are specifications of its components, estimate cost and
identify potential patent violation. Acquiring sensitive data by
disassembly and analysis of the design of system component.

NEED FOR REVERSE ENGINEERING

Academic/learning purposes: Reverse Engineering for
learning purpose may be understand the key issues of an un
successful design and subsequently improve design.

SPECIFIC NEED FOR REVERSE

ENGINEERING OF A PART OR
PRODUCT:
The original manufacturer of a product produces no longer
produces that product, but the customer needs the product.
There is inadequate documentation of the original design.
The original design documentation has been lost or never
existed.

SPECIFIC NEED FOR REVERSE

ENGINEERING OF A PART OR
PRODUCT:
Some bad features of a product need to be designed out.
E.g. excessive wear might indicate where a product should be
improved.
To strengthen the good features of a product based on longterm usage of the product.
To analyze the good and bad features of competitors'
product.

SPECIFIC NEED FOR REVERSE

ENGINEERING OF A PART OR
PRODUCT:
To update obsolete materials or obsolete manufacturing
process with more current, less-expensive technologies.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REVERSE

ENGINEERING AND FORWARD
ENGINEERING
At a higher level, there are two types of engineering:
forward engineering and reverse engineering.
The most traditional method, of the development of a
technology is referred to as Forward Engineering. In the
construction of a technology, manufactures develop a product
by implementing engineering concepts and abstractions.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REVERSE

ENGINEERING AND FORWARD
ENGINEERING
Reverse Engineering begins with final product and work
backwards to re-create the engineering concepts analyzing the
design of the system and the inter-relationship of its
components.
The working product that results from a Reverse
Engineering effort is more like a duplicate of the original
system, without necessarily adding modifications or
Improvements to the original design.

STAGES INVOLVED IN REVERSE

ENGINEERING
In order to Reverse engineer a product or component of a
system, engineering and researchers generally follow the
following 4 Stages
1. Identifying the product or component which will be
Reverse Engineered.
2. observing or disassembling the information documenting
how the original product works.
3. Implementing the technical data generated by Reverse
Engineering in a replica or modified version of the
original.

STAGES INVOLVED IN REVERSE

ENGINEERING
4. Creating a new product ( and, perhaps, introducing it into
the market.

ACTUAL REVERSE ENGINEERING

PROCESS:
The reverse engineering process begins with identified
products. Then the appropriate method to capture required,
part geometry and how the final out put is used.
if once the geometry is captured by say 3D scanning, the
point cloud is produced and surfacing begins.
Then the data generated during 3D CAD model can be
developed , using the CAD platforms, making Reverse
Engineering model ready for tooling or additional design
modification

ACTUAL REVERSE ENGINEERING

PROCESS:
Finally, a full parametric 3D CAD model can be developed,
using the CAD platforms, making Reverse Engineering model
ready for tooling or additional design modification.

JERRY CAN-CASE STUDY OF

REVRSE ENGINEERING:
One of the earliest examples of Reverse Engineering in
mechanical design was the Jerry Can: during WWII Allied
troops noticed how superior German fuel carriers were to their
own. They got hold of one, deconstructed it, and from its
principles created the familiar Jerry Can.!

Conclusion
The purpose of Reverse Engineering is to understand
current design solution and technologies using dissection,
experimentation and analysis.
Reverse Engineering of geometric models for CAD/CAM
is a rapidly evolving discipline in which interest is currently
high.
Reverse Engineering serves as a tool to understand current
design solution and technology.
In the end, the goal is to save time and gain insight into
how other has approached similar design challenges.
