I work in an accounting company. Its quite a big deal because its rather a prestigious place to
work and working here certainly means Im never in the red. Although the salary is quite
decent, I still have to afford to live well. Because I live in London most of my hard-earned
money is spent on rent and getting to and from work. For the time being, I live with three
other young professionals. I plan to get my own place soon. Im not exactly having the time of
my life in this city but I do love it a lot.
My working hours are quite long but thats because Im only just starting out and Im one of
those new accountants whose boss gets her to do all of the menial tasks. Its fine though
because it means he hardly gives me the time of day and I dont have to be in the same
room with him for very long. Thank god!
However, one day, he called me into his office. He basically shouted at me for not calling him
Sir when I entered. Hes so behind the times! I remember thinking at that point that it was
the worst day possible. I was so pressed for time because I had a lot of other projects going
on. In a moment of optimism I just thought he might want me to fetch him another cup of
coffee. Unfortunately, he had a lot of other things he wanted me to do besides that.

1. Listen to a woman explaining her last holiday. Why has she given it the
name Calling time?
Calling time
My last trip was beyond my wildest dreams. I was among friends, loving life in a
different country, and I didnt want to come back
But I had to, for many different reasons, not least because of money. I had spent
two months in Thailand and was quickly running out of resources. If I wasnt careful
Id be skint in a few more weeks and I still had six weeks left of my trip. I planned to
go to other countries. I had a friend who was a diving instructor in Malaysia and
another friend who was working on a Save the Bears project in Cambodia. I thought
I had plenty of time to kill and Id be able to visit them. Unfortunately, this isnt
what happened.
After about five blissful weeks in Thailand, including a crazy weekend in Bangkok, I
was walking comfortably along the sand one night on one of the busier Islands
when I felt someone behind me, tugging my bag handles. He whispered very
threateningly in my ear and so I let go of the bag. He ran off. I wasnt , thankfully,
carrying anything valuable, just money. 150 euros to be exact. I didnt normally
walk around with money and I will never ever let that happen again. It was a stupid
move on my part but thankfully I heard a little while later that there had been a
series of similar incidents in the area. They had found the man responsible and he

However, after the 150 euro theft and a bit of a shock to my system I was doubting
whether Id feasibly be able to go and visit my friends. I wanted to go more than

someone from a school in which I had applied to be their head of Science. Just the
person we were hoping to speak to.a womans voice started Apparently, there
was a new opening for the position and they wanted to give me a trial period. I
explained that I was in Thailand and whether they wouldnt mind waiting a week as
I had to get flights booked. I think they were just so relieved that I was making an
effort to come back that the woman agreed.
Five years on and Im stressed but happy with my job and of course Ive visited my
friends in Malaysia and Cambodia many times over the years with thankfully no
more incidents of theft. Thank god for the summer holidays I now have the best of
both worlds.
