Problem?
1. How long do you think you can hold your
breath?
2. When you hold your breath, what do you
think to the oxygen concentration in your lungs?
3. When you hold your breath, what do you
think happens to the carbon dioxide
concentration in your lungs?
4. On average, people can hold their breath for
a minute. What do you think prevents people
from holding their breath for 2 or 3 minutes?

Objective
In this experiment, you will :
Use an O2 Gas Sensor to determine
residual
oxygen levels in exhaled air.
Evaluate how internal O2 and CO2
concentrations influence breathing
patterns.

ENHANCES

In your lungs there are millions of tiny

air sacs, each surrounded by many tiny
blood vessels. O2 diffuses from the air
in these air sacs to the blood in the
surrounding blood vessels. Then blood
with O2 is pumped by the heart
through larger blood vessels to tiny
blood vessels near each cell in your
body. There, the O2 diffuses from the
blood into the cells. The carbon dioxide
will transfer out from the body as it not
for our body.
The inspiratory centre immediately
stimulates the inspiratory muscles to
inspire. The net effect of the above is
that as exercise intensity increases, the
depth of breathing decreases and the
rate of breathing increases.
