4 - CALCULATE THE
AMOUNT OF HEAT QUANTITY

HEAT QUANTITY
Heat capacity is the amount
of energy (heat) needed to
increase temperature of a
substance by one degree. It
reflects the capacity of the
substance to retain heat. As
defined, heat capacity has
only a limited application
since it is extensive property
i.e. depends on mass of the
substance.

Q
c
mT

where,
c, is the heat quantity
(J/Kg C)
Q, is the amount of heat
transfer (J)
m, is the mass of the
substance (Kg)
T is the change in
temperature (C)

Q
c
mT

EXAMPLE
Question : Calculate the heat capacity if 2000 J of heat is used to heat iron
rod of mass 5 Kg from 20'C to 30'C?
Solution:
Given: Mass m = 5 Kg,
Temperature difference $\Delta$ T = 10'C,
Heat lost Q = 2000 J
The specific Heat is given by c =Q/mdT
= 2000/5(10)
= 40 J/kg'C
