INTRODUTION
Family- Solanaceae
Botanical Name- Solanum tuberosum L.
Origin- South America

Potato is an important vegetable crop of the world.


At present, it occupies as much as 1.08 million hectares in India.
China Ist in area and production for potato.
Indias rank- 5 th in area and production of potato.
It is important crop for higher population areas of Asia because
it produces more dry matter food.
N2 is most important nutrient for potato crop.

IMPROVED VARIETIES OF POTATO


VARIETIES:
(A)Early Maturing
1. Kufri Chandramukhi (A 2708) : It is capable of yielding 120-150
q/ha when harvested earlier but it may yield as high as 250-350 q/ha
when taken as main crop. It has attractive, oval and white tubers with
good flavor but is susceptible to early blight.
2. Kufri Lavkar : It is photosensitive variety and matures within 70-80
days times. It is recommended for Deccan Plateau. The tubers are white,
round with shallow eyes.
3.Kufri Alankar : The may be harvested after 90 days it prouces as
high as 350 q/ha. It has a good tolerance to early and late blight diseases.

4. Kufri Shakti : It takes about 95-110 days to mature and is suitable


for north Indian plains. The tubers are white, round and large in size.
5. Kufri Bahar (E. 3797) : Its tuber is white, smooth and oval, the crop
is ready for harvest within 90 to 100 days after planting.

(B) Late Maturing
1. Kufri Deva (C-3804) : It matures within 110 days. Tubers are red
and round. It has short stolons and tubers are well laid around the
main stem, hence harvesting is easy.
2. Kufri Jeewan : A late maturing high-yielding variety possessing a

1. Kufri Sinduri (C 140) : Medium maturing with round, light red,
medium sized tubers. It is resistance to early blight and can
tolerate frost moderately. It can produce about 250-350 q/ha.
2. Kufri Jyoti : A widely adaptable variety which is highly responsive
to fertilizers. It is highly resistance to late blight and wart
diseases. It bears white and oval tubers and is capable of
producing
about 180 q/ha tubers.
3. Kufri Badshah (J.F. 4870) : It is late maturing 100-120 days,
possessing a high degree of field resistance to early and late
blight. The tubers are large sized , oval with white skin. It is
recommended for cultivation in hills.
4. Kufri Lalima (B.S./C 1753) : Its tuber is round with red skin. Pulp is
white. The crop is ready for harvest within 90 t0 100 days after
planting.
5. Kufri Kissan : It has medium lager white tubers and is recommended
for plains of U.P., M.P. & Delhi.

6. Kufri Chipsona : Tolerant to frost and late blight.


7. Kufri Swarna : Resistant to late blight and cyst nematode.
8. Kufri Pukhraj : Resistant to early blight.

(D) Clonal Selection
1. Kufri Red : Selection from Dargiling Red Round another 120 days it
has red round tubers with medium deep eyes and yellow flesh.

(E) Hybrid Varieties


1. JH-22 : Yield 25-30 t/ha in 80-85 days.
2. JI-5857 : Yield 30-32 t/ha in 95-100 days.
3. JEX/C-166 : Yield 30-35 t/ha in 90-95 days.
4. PJ-376 : Yield 28-30 t/ha in 70-80 days.
5. Kufri Chandramukhi : S-4485 x Kufri Kuber

6. Kufri Sheetman : Phulwa x Craigs defience. Resistant to frost.
