Are Smartphones
destructive for teenagers?

Why did I choose this topic?

This phenomenon is mainly affecting us: teenagers and students.

Smartphone usage is increasing (quarter of teenagers posses a smartphone an

more than half posses a normal phone (Statista 2015)).

Students are not aware of the consequences that smartphone usage has on
them.

Students and teenagers are getting addicted to smartphones

If this problem is considered more seriously, negative consequences in the

future can be prevented.

1. Obesity

Smartphone users just might be the new coach potatoes (Grey 2013, 1)

People who use a smartphone have less physical activity

Young people use smartphones while they are performing other activities

Heavy cellphone use can create mindless eating (Grey 2013, 1)

2. Sleeplessness

Most of the teenagers use their phones for more than half hour before they go
to sleep.

Smartphones omit a blue light which affects the brain of the consumer.

Presence of smartphones while sleeping also causes sleeplessness because of

EMR (Electromagnetic Rays) that cause serious problems to the brain.

3. Sight Problems

The Medical Director of TheSightMatter.com, has claimed that at least one

out of four eye patients complains about eye strain due to reading text on a
small screen (Taylor 2016, 1).

Distance from the screen is actually only of the factors that damage vision.

4. Addiction

Smartphones have become part of the [students] (Cotter 2015, 1).

Nomophobia; no mobile phone phobia (Gregoire 2015, 1).

Variety of Applications

5. GPA & Performance at school

Students check their phones approximately 11 times a day while they are in
class (Yoon-ji 2015, 1).

All the entertainment in the smartphones only encourages students to waste

their time on it and saps their motivation to grasp the knowledge they need
(Yoon-ji 2015, 1).

The more teens are boosted to use smartphones the more our society is
derogated.

6. Fake Merits

Students use smartphones for cheating in examinations by taking snapshots

and sharing them in a group of let say WhatsApp group (Kibona & Rugina
2015, 4).

Apparently, one third of teens use smartphones to cheat in school (Yoon-ji

2015, 1).

7. Relationships

Smartphones are disconnecting people from society and relationships due to

their addictive nature (Yoon-ji 2015, 1).

Smartphones are causing us to tune out the world and interact less with
each other (Matteson 2014, 1) .

Some teens tend to use their phones even when they are socializing with
other people.

Every user will have only "fake friends" online and no true relationships with
others (Yoon-ji 2015, 1).

8. Wipe Smartphones???

Smartphones alleviated the consumers life.

Smartphones have many apps which can help elderly people.

There are apps that can help them improve their knowledge and do better at
school.

Conclusions

If smartphones are not used properly they are destructive for teens and
students

Smartphones cause health problems

Smartphones can create a society with fake merits

Smartphones can prevent students for achieving their best at school

Smartphones have the potential to disconnect people
