Automating & Analyzing

Greenhouse Hydroponic
farms
Using Internet of Things

What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a method of
growing plants without soil.
It is the fastest growing sector
of agriculture and it could
very well dominate food
production in the future.

Hydropon
ic
medium
We take a seed, insert it
in hydroponic medium .

Then we put the pot in water.

We place the hydroponic

medium in a pot or tray.

Nutrient solutions are added in the water.

Plants get nutrients from the water.

Advantages of Hydroponic
farming
Hydroponic farms require 90-95% less
water than conventional farms.
Farms can be set up anywhere as no soil
is required.
Plants grow 20-80% faster in hydroponics.
Year long harvesting is possible.
Plants need less space than conventional
farms hence 2-4 times more seeds can be
planted in the same space.

Using temperature control systems

plants can be grown out of season
or zone.
No soil borne diseases, no weed, no
dust.
Can be grown vertically.
Production is high. It can get more
than twice of conventional farms.

Disadvantages of
Hydroponic farms
Initial cost is high.
Needs more supervision.
Needs more technical
knowledge.
Difficult to balance pH levels.

Aim of the project

To make a compact system to
automate nutrient dose, pH ,water
supply and temperature of a
greenhouse hydroponic farm.
To gain information about the
farm by plotting graphs using
sensor data.

What our website will do with

the data?
Automate water supply, pH value, temperature
Send warning messages
Expenses in every harvest eg. Water
Accounting
Make graphs such as
CO2 levels in the system vs CO2 levels out of
the system
Temperature when exhaust fan is on vs when it
is of

Scope
Many IoT enabled hydroponic farms can
be placed near the city areas which will
directly cut transportation costs & using
IoT plants can be transported safely.
Rooftop farms , vertical farms ,green
buildings
A standard website can be made which
will take sensor data place correct graphs
and help farmers to attain information.
This way every farm will be used for
research purposes.
Using IoT farms will talk with each other

Oxygen sensors, growth sensors and

other sensors will open doors for further
research.
Ways to save energy and water can be
found. Eg. AeroFarm in U.S.A. which uses
95% less water ,solar energy .
Government, big co-operations will jump
into hydroponics as years go on because
of low arable land , availability of water,
costs ,climate change, increasing
population.
