INTRODUCTION
The

use of shear flexible materials in aircraft, automotive, shipbuilding and other

industries requires the accurate prediction of structural behavior of beams.

The

beam theories are the active areas of research since the historical time.

The

classical engineering theory of bending is due to Bernoulli and Euler (1705) and
had its origin in the first mathematical model of nature of the resistance of a beam
developed by Galileo Galilei (1638).

11/24/16

Saint Venant (1856) presented the complete solution of the beam problems
considering bending and shear stresses.

The theory reached maturity due to the well known Kirchhoff hypothesis and the
resolution of famous boundary conditions paradox by Kirchhoff in 1850.

AIM of Research

To present the comprehensive literature survey and its critical

study on the shear deformation theories. And also to develop new
shear deformation theory using Hyperbolic functions associated
with shear deformation and the transverse shear stress
distribution through the thickness of beams, with minimum
number of displacement variables.

OBJECTIVES

To present the comprehensive literature survey and its critical study on the shear
deformation theories.

To develop new shear deformation theory using Hyperbolic functions associated with
shear deformation and the transverse shear stress distribution through the thickness of
beams, with minimum number of displacement variables.

To develop the theory in a simple way and having the features such as utilization
simplicity, accuracy, free of shear correction factors.

11/24/16

To obtained results for the simple and cantilever beams subjected to various loading
cases which are not available in the literature.

To assess the effect of local stress concentration.

To develop the general solution technique and to obtain the general solutions of the
beam bending problems under consideration and to establish the validity of the
newly developed theory by applying it to flexural analyses of beams and comparing
the results with various other solutions.

11/24/16

NECESSITY OF REFINED THEORIES

The shear deformation effects are more pronounced in the thick beams.

These effects are neglected in ETB.

To describe the correct bending behavior of thick beams including shear deformation
effects and the associated cross sectional warping.

This can be accomplished by selection of proper kinematic and constitutive models.

11/24/16

SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK

Beams with various other boundary and loading conditions.

Buckling analysis of beams, plates and shells.

Dynamic analysis of beams, plates and shells.

Finite element analysis can be carried out.

Non-linear analysis of beams, composite, laminated plates

and shells.

Analysis of dynamics problem of shear flexible beams.

Classifications of theories
1. Displacement based
theories
1. In plane and transverse
displacements are expanded in the
thickness coordinate using Taylor
series or power series and the series
at the required power of thickness
coordinate.
2. The power governs the order of
displacement based theory.

2.Stress based
theories
1. Derived from assumed stress
field of axial stresses.
2. Assumed to vary linearly over
the thickness of beam.
3. The transverse normal and
shear stresses are then derived
from the EE of problem in the
theory of elasticity.
