WHAT IS NANOTECHNOLOGY?

Technology manipulating at range billionth of a meter

Nanometre is billionth of a meter.
Properties of materials can be deliberately improved by
introducing characteristic structures on Nano scale.

WHY NANOTECHNOLOGY?

To enhance properties of material used in construction.

To satisfy the general aspect of people i.e. of quality,
control & reliability.
To reduce cost of constructing structures.

APPLICATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Concrete
Glass
Steel
Coatings
Fire
Protection

NANOTECHNOLOGY AND CONCRETE

Nano-materials used in
concrete
Nano Silica
Fly Ash
Titanium Dioxide
Carbon Nanotube

NANO SILICA
Nano
Silica
can
improve
strength,
workability
and
resistance to penetration of
water in concrete.
Addition of 10% of Nano SiO2
increases strength of concrete
by 26% after 28 days.
Addition of very low amount of
Nano silica also increases
strength.

FLY ASH
Improvement
in
strength, durability and
importantly
for
sustainability
and
replacing cement.
Addition of SiO2 in
addition
to
fly
ash
increases strength of
concrete.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE
It is hydrophobic in nature and
gives self cleaning properties to
the surface.
It breaks down organic pollutants,
volatile
organic
compounds,
bacterial
membranes
through
powerful catalytic reaction.
Early hydration of Portland cement,
increase in strength and abrasion
resistance of concrete

CARBON NANOTUBE (CNT)

Addition of small amount of
CNT (1% by WT) can improve
mechanical properties and
resistance
to
crack
propagation.
Portland cement and water
show
improvements
in
compressive strength (+25
N/MM2) and Flexural strength
(+8 N/MM2) when CNT is
added.

NANOTECHNOLOGY
AND GLASS

GLASS
Self cleaning, antifogging
properties and anti-sticking
of
pollutants
on
glass
surface.
Fumed silica Nano particles
for Fire protective glass.
Control of heat and light
entering the building by
tungsten oxide layer.

NANOTECHNOLOGY
AND STEEL

SANDVIK NANOFLEX

Sandvik Nanoflex is produced by Sandvik Materials Technology.

It has both desirable qualities of high Youngs modulus and high
strength.
Resistant to corrosion due to presence of very hard Nanometre
sized particles in steel matrix.

MMFX2
Nano structure modified
steel produced by MMFX
Corp USA.
It
has
modifies
Nano
structure that makes it
corrosion resistant.
Higher strength, ductility
and fatigue resistance.

NANOTECHNOLOGY AND COATING

COATING
Coatings using Nano materials (like TiO2) have been developed
which help in:

Protective or anti-corrosion coatings for components

Self cleaning and easy to clean.
Thermal control and energy savings.
Anti-reflection and anti-bacterial for glass/windows.
Special coatings can also make the applied surface both
hydrophobic and oleo phobic at the same time.

NANOTECHNOLOGY AND FIRE PROTECTION

FIRE PROTECTION

Fire resistance of steel structures is often provided by a coating

produced by spray-on cementitious process.
Nano cement has potential to create a material that is tough,
durable and high temperature resistant coating.
Carbon Nano tubes with cementitious material can provide
properties like strength to the surface applied.

FUTURE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY IN
CE
There
is
substantial
money
flowing
into
Nano-related
research
from
multinational
corporations and venture capital
investments.
Many of the worlds largest
companies such as IBM, Intel,
Motorola, Lucent, Boeing, Hitachi,
etc. have all had significant Nanorelated research projects going
on, or launched their own
nanotech initiatives.

CONCLUSION

Research in nanotechnology that is related to construction is still

in its infancy; however the main benefits and barriers that allow
the effect of nanotechnology on construction to be defined.
Recent years of R&D have shown massive investments Nanoconstruction.
High cost of manipulation and research.
