Topic 11: What Else Is There?

Behind YOUCAT
When the American novelist Walker Percy was asked
why he became a Catholic, his reply was, What else is
there? You and I might be tempted to reply, Plenty.
But ultimately, is that so? If God is real and we were
made for happiness with him, in the end there really
isnt anything else. Everything else must be
understood in the light of God, who alone can make us
truly happy. Blessed Charles de Foucauld said, After I
recognized there is a God, it was impossible for me not
to live for him alone. In the end, the persons and
things of this life either take us back to God, or they
take us away from him. Those who recognize this and
commit themselves accordingly we call saints.

YOU Reflect
How well do you know the saints? Can you picture
yourself becoming a saint? For some people, even
for some Catholics, the idea of becoming a saint
seems boring. Yet the Lives of the Saints are filled
with very different and universally fascinating people.
All of us are made for happiness, and studying their
lives we find though they often struggled to
overcome personal weakness and sin the saints are
the only truly happy persons. More to the point, each
of us will ultimately return to God and therefore
become saints, or we will face eternity without God
and thus, without meaning, purpose, love, or
happiness. So lets get started now on becoming
saints ourselves.

YOU Reflect
1. When you think of the idea of a saint,
what images come into your mind?
Why?
2. What do you think is the biggest
mistake people make about saints?
3. How are ultimate happiness and being
a saint linked together?
