History

Started in the 1920's in Atlantic City when Business men would try to keep
tourist past labor day by having city wide" Fall Frolic" where women would
participate in a rolling chair parade down the boardwalk.

Newspapers helped sponsor popularity contests for their readers where

the winner would be awarded a all expense paid trip to the Second annual
Fall Frolic.

In 1992 Margret Gorman Was awarded" the most beautiful bathing

women" with the Golden Mermaid trophy then in 1922 was informally
named the first "Miss America."

In 1951 Yolande Betbez entering into her first Miss America pageant for
scholarship opportunities after winning the Miss America pageant Yolande
declared that she was an opera singer, not a pin-up." And never posed in a
swimsuit again.

Yolande's strong stance pushed the swimsuit

sponsor, Catlina to drop out of the Miss
America pageants and start Miss USA.

Many women found this to be a huge shift in

society considering in the years previous we
were fighting for our social and polictial rights
in society.

heavy make up and provocative poses pushed
the country to limit pageants to girls who are
16 and older and those who broke this law
could face a 30,000. Euro fine or up to two
years in jail.

negative attitude. People believe they were harming
children physiologically, physically and intellectually.

Should allow the same 16 year old limits as France to

Beauty Pagents have been around for about

100 years.

Some may say it builds confidence and other

important skills

Some may say that it causes emotional stress

That the U.S should restrict the pagents the

way the other countries do
