Darlington Nuclear Generating

Station: Life Cycle Analysis of

Radioactive Release [gaseous
and liquid effluents]
Kandarp

Objective of Reactor Safety Program in

Canada:
The purpose of any power station in Canada, regardless of
type is to produce
Safe
Reliable
Economical electricity
The objective of Canadian Nuclear Power Plant is to
protect the public, employees and environment from
radiological hazards resulting from regular station
operations or in the unlikely event of an accident.

Goal: The goal of this study is to assess the

environmental impacts caused by radioactive effluents
during the nuclear power generation processes and
facilities as Environmental Protection and Radiation
Protection perspective in Canada.
.The

main objective of this study is to identify most

dominant stage of Nuclear Power Generation in terms of
radioactive effluents release and to aware public about
the radioactive release from NPP with compare to the
regulatory limits.
Application: The findings of the study are intended for
Assessment of the radioactive effluents release by
Darlington
Nuclear Generating Station is within
Regulatory limits or not

Motivation:

To make public aware by invalidating myth and

misconception

To convince CNSC

Audience
Public
CNSC Inspector and Commission
The licensee
Comparative Assertion
To compare the result with the regulatory limit as per
regulatory requirements of Environmental Protection
and Radiation Protection

Scope
It is Functionally equivalent because the study
compares the result with the regulatory limit and
test
The elementary flow and the product flow are
electricity, raw materials, and radioactive liquid and
gaseous emission

Functional Unit:
The Operating Stage of the Darlington NPP
Year [the annual data has been considered in this
study]
Inventory Output: Radioactive effluents emission on
daily basis
Type of LCA
Accounting [Comparing result with Regulatory
Limit]
Stand alone [Identifying the most dominant stage
in terms of
Radioactive effluents release

Geographical Boundary: Canada

Time: The licensee keep improving the technologies to
lessen the emission from the plant
Transportation has been excluded due to negligible
impact
Allocation: Tritium due to its advantage and
disadvantage
Assumption: In this study, only emission of tritium has
been taken into account.
In mining , milling and fuel fabrication, all facilities and
organizations have been considered.
Transportation has negligible impact for releasing

Data:
Secondary data from CNSCs reports and Licensees
reports
Limitations:
Differentiate use of resources among the Operating
Authorities
Unable to identify long term impact

The uranium mining and milling discussed in this project

are located in Northern Saskatchewan, and there are five
Uranium mining and milling facilities operated by Cameco
Corporation and Areva Resources Canada Inc.
There are 5 fuel processing and manufacturing facilities
located within Ontario. Those five facilities are Camecos
Blind River Refinery (BRR), Camecos Port Hope
Conversion Facility (PHCF), Cameco Fuel Manufacturing
Inc.
(CFM),
General
Electric-Hitachi
Canada
in
Peterborough and General Electric-Hitachi Canada in
Toronto.
Processing Facilities such as Tritium Processing and
Cobalt Processing facilities are taken into account.
The Darlington NPP s Operating stage has been
considered.

Biological Impacts
Impacts on animals and birds etc

Discussion:
The data of inventory and impact assessment show that the
Darlington Nuclear Power Generation Station releases very
small amount of gaseous and liquid effluents in the
environment and nearby water reservoir. It releases gaseous
and liquid effluents on daily bases but it is in control manner
and only approximately 1-2% of Regulatory or license limit. In
this report, most data taken from secondary source and it is
from CNSC publication.
Conclusion:
This Life Cycle Assessments have shown the importance of the
environmental impact of the gaseous and liquid effluents from
the Darlington Nuclear Power Generation Station. As per
assessments, the project concludes that the gaseous and liquid
radioactive effluents released by NPP are way below the
regulatory limits. Furthermore, the operation phase of the
