Agritourism- A Path To

Community Development ?
The Case Of Bangunkerto,
Indonesia

INTRODUCTION
In order to evaluate the potential of agritourism
generating community development, the
initiatives taken by the residents of the village of
Bangunkerto, Indonesia.
In order to get an understanding of how their lives
have changed since to introduction of tourism and
the adoption of salak as the dominant crop, thirtyseven area farmers were interviewed

Nozick said developed the following list of
principles of sustainable community
development :
1. Economic self reliance
2. Ecological sustainability
3. Community control
4. Meetting individual needs
5. Building a community a culture

CONT.
Typology of how people participate in
development programmes. Participation ranges
from :
1. Passive Participation, where people are told what
development project is proceeding
2. Self mobilisation, where people take initiatives
independent of external institutions.

AGRITOURISM CASE STUDY


The purpose of the project is not only to expose
tourists to the natural environment but also to
stimulate awareness and demand for the product. The
following 7 objectives have been put forward for the
project :
1. Increase agricultural production
2. Increase income to farmers
3. Develop the area in an environmentally sound maner
4. Generate a promotional medium for agricultural
production
5. Expand the market
6. Increase foreign exchange earnings
7. Promote human development

SITE DESCRIPTION
The area has been divided into three zones
1. Inner zone lies the agritourism centre built on
communal goverment land and managed by
local resident.
2. A support zone which is comprised of
households whose primary crop is salak.
3. The third zone which is even greater in size
identified as a second support zone where
contact with tourists is reduced and the main
activity is farming salak

COMMUNITY ASPECT
The important aspect of agritourism is
foster local involvement, co operation, and
community development

METHODS
The purpose of this exploratory research
was to investigates attitudes in the
community as a results of the adoption of
agritourism
The survey was divided into four category
demographics, agriculture and tourism,
agricultual practise, and marketing
practise

INTERVIEW RESULTS
Result indicate that the farmers are generally
posstive towards the initiative in the community
and wish to see it develop further
The second part of the survey dealt with
specifically addressed the relationship between
agriculture and tourism
The third is about full time employment in tourism
sector

Table 16.1 the majority of farmer dont feel that


agritourism has helped the markeing while the
village staf feel that the project has resulted inn
an increase in marketing of the product
Table 16.2 those that work on the site believe the
project has resulted in an increase in production
while those who dont work on the site dont
believe that there has been an increase in
production
Table 16.3 those that have been involved in the
planning of the site wnta a full time job working in
tourism while those not involved in the planning
have little desire to work full time in tourism
