and contribute to service decisions

How it Multicultural learning happened this year

As educators, we collaborate with families to extend on childrens current
interests within the program, this is an example of how Smiths interest in
boomerangs started the groups multicultural learning this year
Kathy to Smith, 29th of June 2015
Smith was very excited with the creation made out of icy pole
sticks. He informed me that one of his peers had made it for
him. Smith threw it across the yard and with a big smile on his
face said, That's pretty cool. I told Smith that the creation
looked like a boomerang. 'What's a boomerang?' Asked Smith.
We found some pictures and learned a little about
boomerangs- they can be used for hunting. After further
discussion with Smith, we decided we should learn more about
boomerangs and make some in our program.
Hollie, NAIDOC week is nearing, where we will explore indigenous cultures in depth, but I think it's
a fantastic idea to have it more embedded in our program!
Lyndall, that's great. thanks for the update, love it and will have a chat about it with him. Sam
Christine, We also have Annette Sax from Yarn Strong Sister visiting the Dragonfly group in
October. She will be spending a couple of hours with the children talking about Aboriginal heritage
and culture. Hopefully Smith will be able to share all he has learnt about Boomerangs with her.

Around the World

From NAIDOC week and the Family Cultural evening, children began to ponder
their own cultural backgrounds, therefore we began to explore a different
countries culture each week.

We began this by asking families to kindly send in their

childs name, their cultural background and something
interesting about their cultural background. The children
then drew pictures of themselves and we placed their
picture with their fact sheet around the map.

China
Raynard and his family
taught the group
Chinese words and his
mother Yating wrote all
the childrens names in
Chinese. Throughout
the week we practiced
the words, made
Chinese drums, cooked
and ate fried rice.

United Kingdom
We explored the queen and
double decker buses. We
created our own queens
guards and made scones for
morning tea throughout the
week.

Greece

James and his

mother, our
educator, taught
us some greek
words. The
children created
their own
olympic reefs
and we made
spanakopita
throughout the
week.

America
Natalie and her mother, Kate taught the
group about where they grew up, America.
They discussed the differences between
America and Australia, with the children
confirming it's like "opposite land." We
cooked apple pie throughout the week and
the children made their American flags.
