THE HISTORY

H a n s o n G r e g o r y, a n A m e r i c a n ,
claimed to have invented the ringshaped doughnut in 1847 aboard a
lime-trading ship when he was only
16 years old. Gregory was
d i s s a t i s fi e d w i t h t h e g r e a s i n e s s o f
doughnuts twisted into various
shapes and with the raw center of
regular doughnuts. He claimed to
have punched a hole in the center
of dough with the ship's tin pepper
box, and to have later taught the
t e c h n i q u e t o h i s m o t h e r.

Smithsonian Magazine states that his mother, Elizabeth

Gregory, "made a wicked deep-fried dough that cleverly used
her son's spice cargo of nutmeg and cinnamon, along with
lemon rind," and "put hazelnuts or walnuts in the center,
where the dough might not cook through", and called the
food 'doughnuts.
The second theory according to anthropologistPaul R.
Mullins, the first cookbook mentioning doughnuts was an
1803 English volume which included doughnuts in an
appendix of American recipes. By the mid-19th century, the
doughnut looked and tasted like todays doughnut, and was
viewed as a thoroughly American food.

HOW ITS MADE

(RECIPE)
Pop out a biscuit onto a cutting board. Flatten it a
bit, and press a drinking glass into the middle to
cut out the center of the doughnut. (Save that bit
of dough to make doughnut holes!) Fill a pan with
vegetable oil enough so that the bottom and part
of the doughnut side will be immersed in it and
heat it up. Drop in the dough, and let them fry
until they are golden brown on the underside. Flip
and repeat. Now you have your doughnuts!

But dont stop there. We all

know doughnuts are really
just sugar delivery
mechanisms. Buzzfeed offers
a few ideas for toppings. You
can coat them in a cinnamon
sugar mixture. Or you can
make your own glaze by
mixing 2 cups powdered
sugar, 4 tablespoons milk,
and teaspoon vanilla. Add
3 tablespoons of cocoa
powder to make a chocolate
glaze.

Because of the difficulties of providing

freshly baked goods from huts established in
abandoned buildings near the front lines, the
two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign
Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen
Purviance) came up with the idea of
providing doughnuts.
