elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Of the 31 student, staff, and nonstudent

After an Oregon high school freshman armed with an assault rifle injured a teacher, killed a
student and killed himself Tuesday, a striking statistic began circulating on the internet. It said that
at least 74 school shootings had occurred since December 2012, when an assault on Sandy Hook
Elementary School by Adam Lanza left 28 dead, including Lanza and his mother.

January 14, 2014

School shooting in New Mexico that injured two students marked the 30th
such incident since the Sandy Hook massacre just over one year ago, and was
at least the 17th shooting this school year.
Another shooting happened in Jackson, Tenn., when a student brought a gun to
school and shot a classmate in the leg. Three weeks before that, four
teenagers in Fresno, Calif., targeted an athletic trainer at Edison High School,
shooting him several times.
In total, there were at least 24 recorded school shootings in the 2012-13 school
year, including the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in which
shooter Adam Lanza killed 26 children and adults before turning the gun on
himself.

Virtual schooling is a relatively new concept that allows a student to attend

school from home, with certified teachers and a set curriculum
40 states participate in some form of online learning or virtual schooling, with
30 of those states offering full-time options. Most virtual schools are tuition
free and run by a state initiative, though there are private virtual schools that
offer a more diverse course curriculum and have some fees associated with
them
