QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE

Read in the name of your Lord who created,
created man from a clot.
Read, for your Lord is most generous, Who
teaches by means of the pen, teaches man what
he does not know. (Al-Alaq)
These were the first five verses revealed to the
Holy Prophet (S.A.W), the first word being read.
Out of a total of 6,328 verses in the Holy Quran
the word Ilm (knowledge) and its derivatives
are used more than 780 times, the concept of
reasoning 49 times.
Allah says: We fashioned man according to the
best way. (Al-Tin: 95:4)
This supremacy was only awarded to Adam over
angels because of his being endowed with the
capacity to learn and comprehend.

Address by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

1. ONENESS OF ALLAH
I Bear witness() that there is no God but
Allah, the one, having no partner with Him. He
is the sovereignty() and to him is due all
praise. He grants life and causes death and is
powerful over everything.

2. HUMAN EQUALITY
Allah says: O People We created you from one
male and female and made you into tribes and
nations, so as to be known to one another.
Verily( ) in the sight( )of Allah, the most
honored amongst you is the one who is most Godfearing. All mankind is the progeny( )of Adam
and Adam was fashioned out of clay. Behold! Every
claim of privilege()whether that of blood or
property, is under my heels except that of the
custody()of the Kaaba and supplying of water
to the pilgrims() .
3. ABOLITION OF BLOOD REVENGES
Behold! All practice of the days of ignorance are
now under my feet(

. The blood revenges of the days of ignorance are

remitted.

4. ABOLITION OF INTEREST
All interest and usurious()
dues recurring() from the times of
ignorance stand wiped out() .
5. HUMAN DIGNITY
O People, verily your blood, your property and
your
honor
are
sacred()
and
inviolable() until you appear before
your Lord. Verily you will soon meet your Lord
and you will be held answerable for your
actions.

6. RIGHTS OF WOMEN
O People, verily you have got certain rights over
your women and your women have certain rights
over you. It is your right upon them to honor
their conjugal( )right and not to commit
acts of impropriety(), which if they do, you
are authorized by Allah to separate them form
your beds and chastise( ) them, but not
severely()and if they refrain()form them,
clothe and feed them properly. Treat the women
kindly since they are your helpers and are not in
a position to manage their affairs themselves.
Fear Allah concerning women, for verily you have
taken them on the security of Allah and have
made their persons lawful Unto you by words of
Allah.

7. BEQUEST()
O People, Allah, the mighty and Exalted(), has
ordained( )to everyone his due share (of
inheritance.) Hence there is no need (of special)
testament( for a heir((departing from them
rules laid down by the Shariah).
8. ADULTERY
The child belongs to the marriage-bed and the
violator( of wedlock( shall be
stoned(. And Reckoning(
of their (deed )rests with Allah. He who attributes
his ancestry to other than his father, the curse of
Allah is upon him.
9. REPAYMENT OF DEBTS()
All debts must be repaid, all borrowed property must
be returned, gifts should be reciprocated( and a
surety must make good the loss to the assured(

.

10. INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Beware , no one committing a crime is
responsible for it but himself. Neither the son is
responsible for the crime of his father, nor the
father is responsible for the crime of his son.
11. HONESTY
Nothing of his brother is lawful for a Muslim
except what he himself gives willingly. So do not
wrong yourselves .
12. BROTHERHOOD
O People, every Muslim is the brother of other
Muslim, and all the Muslims form one brotherhood.
Take heed not to go astray after me, and
strike on anothers necks. He who (amongst you)
has any trust with him, he must return it to its
owner.

13. OBEDIENCE TO RULERS

O People, Listen and obey, though()a
mangled( ) Abyssinian( ) slave is
appointed your Ameer (Ruler) provided he
executes (the Ordinance of) the Book of Allah
among you.
14. FINALITY OF PROPHETHOOD
O People, No prophet would be raised after me
and no new Ummah (would be formed after
you).
15. ETERNAL() GUIDANCE
O People, understand my words which I convey
to you, I leave behind me two things, the Quran
and my examples; the Sunnah, and if you follow
these you will never go astray.

16. PILLARS OF ISLAM

Behold! Worship your Lord; offer()prayers
five times a day; observe fasts in the month of
Ramadan; pay readily the Zakat (poor due) on
your property; and perform pilgrimage to the
house of Allah and obey rulers and you will be
admitted( to the Paradise of your Lord.
17. PREACHING ISLAM
Let him that is present convey it unto him who is
absent. For many people to whom the message is
conveyed may be more mindful of it than the
audience.

18. FULFILLMENT OF MISSION

And if you were asked about me, what would you
say? People answered; We bear witness(),
you have conveyed the trust (of religion) and
discharged the message and looked to our
welfare.(
There upon Allahs Messenger (may peace be
upon him) lifted his fore-finger towards the sky
and then pointing towards people said; O Lord;
Bear Thou() witness unto()it. O Lord:
Bear Thou witness unto. O Lord: Bear Thou
witness unto it.()

The Prophet Muhammad's

(SAW) Last Sermon

This Sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul

Hijjah 10 A.H in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat

"O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I don't know whether,

after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore
listen to what I am saying to you carefully and take these words
to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, and this city
as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a
sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful
owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember
that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed
reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury
(Interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be
waived...

Beware of Satan, for your safety of your religion. He has lost all
hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things,
so beware of following him in small things.

The Prophet Muhammad's

(SAW) Last Sermon

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to

your women, but they also have right over you. If they abide
by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and
clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to
them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it
is your right that they do not make friends with any one of
whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five

daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and
give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You
know that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. You
are all equal. Nobody has superiority over other except by
piety and good action.
Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer
for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of

righteousness after I am gone

The Prophet Muhammad's

(SAW) Last Sermon
O

People, no prophet or apostle will come after

me and no new faith will be born. Reason well,
therefore, O People, and understand my words
which I convey to you. I leave behind me two
things, the Qur'an and my example, the Sunnah
and if you follow these you will never go astray.
All those who listen to me shall pass on my
words to others and those to others again; and
may the last ones understand my words better
than those who listen to me directly. Be my
witness oh Allah that I have conveyed your
message to your people."

which Allah has forbidden), and recommend one another
to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which
one may encounter in Allahs Cause during preaching His
religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc)

about preaching virtue rather, its
objective is to increase your ability
as engineers to responsibly confront
moral issues raised by technological
activity

Ethics in an Engineering
Course????
We have been studying
engineering, such as design,
analysis, and performance
measurement.

Where does ethics fit in?

How Ethics Fits into

Engineering
Engineers

...

Build products such as cell phones,

home appliances, heart valves, bridges,
& cars. In general they advance society
by building new technology.
Develop processes, such as the
process to convert salt water into fresh
water or the process to recycle bottles.
These processes change how we live
and what we can accomplish.

Products and processes have

consequences for society:

If the bridge has an inadequate support,

it will fail.
If the gas tank is positioned too close to
the bumper, it might explode from a
small accident.
If the process for recycling bottles
produces too much pollution, then it is
counterproductive.
If the process for refining gas produces
too much toxins, it harms the local
community.

Ethics Courage &

Integrity
As

we will be seeing more and

more being ethical requires:
Courage to do the right thing the
situation calls for.
&
The integrity to withstand the pressures
that push you in the wrong direction.
