The World of Inclusive

Education
By: Kaylea Allbertson, Skylee Porten, & Brittany

We will be discussing:
What is inclusive education?
What are the advantages inclusive
education?
What is heterogeneous grouping?
What is Differentiated Instruction?
How to incorporate it in the
classroom?
What goes beyond it outside the
classroom?

Inclusive education is..

It is when all students, with or without disabilities, are
allowed to attend the same class in the proper age
requirement (What is Inclusive Education, n.d). In here they are
apart of the whole school day contributing and participating
in every aspect of it. (What is Inclusive Education, n.d). Every
students deserves to be treated equally. In order to do so all
the teachers in the classroom work together to set up lesson
plans for each day that will best benefit the children in their
class.

Advantages of inclusive
education
All students benefit from inclusive education not just students with
disabilities.
They work on individual goals as well as goals as a group.
Develop relationships with their peers of a wide variety of children.
With proper instructions and higher expectation children can learn
academic skills; even kids with disabilities.
The classroom imitates the real world so children have a better
understanding of it when they go out in it.

Advantages of inclusive education

contd
Children are able to learn at their own pace and their own
style in a comfortable environment.
Children with a disability get to learn beside their peers
without feeling like they arent a part or isolated.
Gives opportunities for children to learn and accept one
another even if they arent the same.
Opportunity to flourish between general education and
special education.

Advantages of inclusive
educationcontd
Provides teachers with support and accommodations to all

students
Behavior supports help maintain a positive learning environment
for everyone.
Consistency is key!
School-wide behavioral supports establish high expectations
throughout school community.
Grouping general education and special education causes for
better challenges

Heterogeneous grouping is
Webster definition: Diverse in character or
content
In the classroom meaning: Pairing students
in groups with every level of educated are
shown in each group.

Differentiated Instruction is
Style of teaching to insure every student is meeting their
goals.
The 4 parts
Content information the student will take from the lesson
Process activities used to further the information the student
just learned
Products practice the information just learned

In order to incorporate it into the

classroom
In our classroom we have:
Level 1 physical education
We have a 90-minute block schedule
We have an inclusive class of 20 students.
5 of these 20 have disabilities such as:
1 student on the spectrum
1 student in a wheelchair with Cerebral Palsy
1 student who requires leg braces
1 student with ADD
1 student with down syndrome.

Incorporate into the classroom

contd
We set up our classroom into group activities.
Each group has 5 students
Rotate through 3 stations daily
spending an average of 30 minutes at each station

Incorporate into the classroom

contd
Standard
Activity
Description
9.3.1 Identify available community
resources that promote an active
lifestyle
9-12. RT.1 Cite specific textual
evidence to support analysis of
technical texts, attending to the
precise details of explanations or
descriptions.

Use the IPads to look up

information

After looking up the information on local

places, the students will need to take a
minimum of 10 minutes to write up a
brief summary of the information they
found on local websites. Students will
need to cite prices, activitys and which
website each point was pulled from.

9.1.3 Model or teach mature motor

skills and movement patterns to
another student.

Stretching

Each student will get a total of 6 minutes

to demonstrate and help guide his peers
into a stretch. The leader will need to
explain how long to hold the stretch.

9.5.6 Apply game rules accurately

and fairly during activity.

Game of soccer

Students will spend their 30-minute block

playing an a total of one 25-minute game
of soccer. The students will act as their
own referees. Disputes will be handled
within the group to work on sportsmen
ship.

Outside the classroom

In order to make inclusive education work you have to go
outside the classroom. It is extremely important that you
communicate with everyone involved that includes teachers,
families, and students. When talking with families you have
to go in with an open mind. Parents sometimes dont want
to see that their child has a disability.

Outside the classroomcontd

Ways to include families and get them involved:
Send home daily/weekly reports (that arent full of
negatives).
Have different gathering every so often so parents can get
to know one another.

Outside the classroomcontd

Have a parent meeting night where all parents come and you
give them an outline of the year and what you will be doing to
help their child be successful and encourage parents to do the
same at home.
Set a routine.
Use direct praise and encourage for each child.
Watch for signs of frustration and failure so you can know how to help
prevent it for next time.

Stay informed with one another that way teachers are informed with any
problems that are happening at home and vise versa.

(Falkenberg &
Barbetta, 2013).

Disadvantages of inclusive
education
Teachers decrease amount of time and energy directed
towards the rest of the class (Tornillo)
Academic accountability and achievements are unable to
be met (Tornillo)
There is also a fear that there will be a loss of advocacy
for those with a learning disability.
Some even say that for each of the individuals true
success comes from different types of classes.
