Recap
In the last class we have learnt about
A milling cutter
Types of milling cutters
Plain milling cutter, side milling cutter and metal
slitting saw

9M402.05

Objectives
On completion of this period ,you would be able to
know about
An angle milling cutter
An end mill
A T-slot mill
A slot drill
A form cutter

Types Of Milling Cutters

Angle Milling Cutter
Used for cutting chamfers, dovetails, helical flutes etc
a) Single angle milling cutter
Have teeth on both the angled face and sides
of the cutter
Made with angles of 30, 45 and 60to 85 in
steps of 5 with one side of the angle at 90 to
the axis of the cutter

Angle Milling Cutter
b) Double angle milling cutter
The face of the cutter is formed into V- shape
Cutting edges are included at 45, 60 and 90
Adapted for cutting spiral grooves on a blank,
bevels

Types Of Milling Cutters

End Milling Cutter
Designed for accurate cutting of slots, pockets, key
ways and intricate contours
Cutting edges are provided on the end face and on
the periphery
Used to machine both horizontal and vertical
surfaces
Diameter ranges from 3mm to 50mm

Types Of Milling Cutters

End Milling Cutter
a) Shank type milling cutters are with taper
shank or straight shank
Taper shank is secured in the
spindle nose
Diameter ranges from 10mm to
50mm
Straight shanks are held in a spring
collet
Extensively used for die-sinking

Types Of Milling Cutters

Shell type end mill
Made without shank with central
hole for mounting on arbor
They have cutting edges on the
periphery and end - face
They are larger and heavier
Diameter ranges from 50mm to

Types Of Milling Cutters - T - Slot Milling

Cutter
It has cutting edges on periphery and on both sides
of the cutter
Used with a vertical spindle
Used for machining the portion of T- slot

Types Of Milling Cutter - Slot Drill

Used for machining a sunk
key way in a shaft
Similar in action to twist drill
Has two cutting edges

17

Types Of Milling Cutters - Woodruff Key Cutter

Used for cutting key-seats to fit
woodruff keys.

They are made in shank style and

in arbor style.

Cutting edges may be straight or

staggered.

19

Form Milling Cutter

They have cutting edges of different
profiles in order to generate required
contours
a) Convex milling cutter
Teeth curved outwards on the
circumference
Used to produce concave grooves

Fig.13

Diameter ranges from 50mm to

125mm

b. Concave milling cutter
Generates convex surfaces and
rounded corners
Diameter ranges from 56mm to
110mm
Minimum radius that can be milled
Fig.15

is 1.5mm - 20mm
9M402.05

22

Form Milling Cutters

c. Gear cutters
Have a profile which cuts the space
between adjacent, involute gear teeth
Commonly available in a range of 8
sizes for cutting gear teeth 12 to135
Fluting cutters, thread milling cutters
etc
