Recap
In the last class, we have learnt about
Various milling operations
Gang milling , gear milling, angular milling, cam
milling, end milling , profile milling ,key way milling

9M402.08

Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be able
to know about
Various work holding devices and tool holding devices
Their constructional details and functions

9M402.08

Work Holding Devices

Accuracy of the milling operation depends more on
the way the tool and the work are held rigidly
Work piece must be secured on the work table and
aligned with the cutter

9M402.08

Work Holding Devices

1. Vices

2. Clamps & t bolts

3. V-blocks

4. angle plates

5. Dividing head

6. Milling fixtures

7. Rotary table

8. Tail stock

Work Holding Devices - Vices

Most common work holding device
Directly clamped to work table
Clamped between fixed and movable jaw
1.plain vice
2.swivel vice
3.universal vice

Recap
So far, we have learnt about
Various kinds of work clamping devices
Name a few of them
Vices,angle plates,clamps ,T-bolts, V-blocks, milling
fixtures,circular table etc
Equally important is tool holding device

9M402.08

20

Tool Holding Devices

Proper devices are designed to hold milling cutters

Some of the devices are arbor ,collets, adapter and
spring collets

9M402.08

21

Necessity Of Tool Holding Devices

To obtain a higher metal removal rate
To get higher spindle speeds which drive the cutters.
To overcome all machining a mechanism to hold the
cutting tool is essential

9M402.08

23

Tool Holding Devices - Arbor

Cutter is directly mounted on it with key
One end is tapered and fits in the spindle nose
Spacing collars are used to position number of cutters
Arbors are available in different
diameters,16mm,22mm,27mm,32mm,and 40mm

25

Tool Holding Devices - Arbor

The other end of the arbor is supported by a yoke
It is designated by the taper number, diameter and
length
For example, ISO 40 x 22 x 500mm

9M402.08

27

Tool holding Devices - Collets

A taper sleeve fitted to the nose of the spindle
It can secure an arbor end or taper shank of cutter
Spring collets used to secure straight shank cutters
The front end is split into three equal-spaced slots and
act like jaws to the shank

30

Tool Holding Devices - Adapters

Attached to the spindle by a draw bolt
Used for cutters having shanks that cannot be
mounted on arbor

9M402.08

32

Tool Holding Devices - Vertical Milling attachment

It facilitates facing and groove cutting on horizontal
surfaces
It may be swiveled to machine inclined surfaces
Spindle speed remains the same

34

Slotting Attachment
It can machine slots and key ways internally
Converts the rotary motion of the spindle into
reciprocating
Slotting head is capable of tilting to desired angle
For slotting , the work is to be clamped on two
parallel bars
