COUPLUING

COUPLING
Usually shafts are 7m.
For greater lengths we have to join two pieces by means of
coupling.
A device used to make permanent or semi-permanent connection
whereas clutch permits rapid connection or disconnection on the
will of operation.
A device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for
purpose of transmitting power.

PURPOSE OF SHAFT
COUPLING:
Most common uses are:
1. To connect shafts that are manufactured separately
disconnection for repairs and alternations in motors and
generators.
2. To provide for misalignment of shaft.
3. To reduce the transmission of shock loads from one shaft to
another.
4. To introduce/provide protection against overloads.

REQUIREMENTS OF GOOD
SHAFT COUPLING:
A good shaft coupling should have the following requirements
1. Should be easy to connect or disconnect.
2. Should transmit full power from one shaft to another without
losses.
3. Should hold shafts in perfect alignment.
4. Should reduce transmission shocks loads from one shaft to
another shaft.
5. Should have no projecting parts.

TYPES OF SHAFT
COUPLING:

Rigid Coupling

Are used to connect two shafts that are perfectly aligned.

Types of rigid coupling are:
a)

Sleeve or muff coupling.

b)

Clamp or split muff or compression coupling.

c)

Flange coupling.

Flexible Coupling

Are used to connect two shafts which have both lateral and angular
misalignment.
Types of flexible coupling are.
a)

Bushed pin type coupling.

b)

Universal coupling.

c)

Oldham coupling.

RIGID COUPLING
Sleeve or muff coupling

Simplest type
Usually made of cast iron
Consist of hollow cylinder whose dimension is same as that of shaft.
Fitted over the end of shafts by means of Gib-head Key.

RIGID COUPLING
Sleeve or muff coupling
Power is transmitted to another shaft by means of a key and a sleeve.
Usual proportion of cast iron sleeve coupling are
Outer diameter D= 2d +13 mm
Length of sleeve L = 3.5 d
Where d is diameter of shaft.

RIGID COUPLING
Sleeve or muff coupling
Design for sleeve
Designed by considering it as a hollow shaft.
Let T be the torque transmitted by the coupling.
c be Permissible shear stress for the material of the sleeve which is
cast iron.
The safe value of shear stress for cast iron may be taken as 14 MPa

RIGID COUPLING
Sleeve or muff coupling

Design for key

Key designing is same as discussed previously.
Width and thickness
Length of the key is at least equal to length of coupling.
The coupling key is usually made into two parts.

RIGID COUPLING
Sleeve or Muff coupling

RIGID COUPLING
Clamp or compression coupling
Also known as split muff coupling.
The muff is made into two halves and are bolted together .
One half of the muff is fixed from above and other half is placed
from below.
Both the halves are held together by means of studs or bolts.

RIGID COUPLING
Clamp or compression coupling
The number of bolts may be two four or six.
The compression coupling consist of muff, key and clamping bolts.

RIGID COUPLING
Design for compression coupling

RIGID COUPLING
DESIGN FOR COMPRESSION COUPLING
Design of muff and key is the same as discussed above.

RIGID COUPLING
FLANGE COUPLING
Coupling having two separate cast iron flanges.
Each flange is mounted on the shaft end and is keyed to it.
Flange coupling is adopted to heavey loads and used on large
shafting.
Flange coupling are of three types.
1. Unprotected type flange coupling.
2. Protected type flange coupling.
3. Marine type flange coupling.

RIGID COUPLING
Unprotected type flange coupling.
