Rhombus

Brief History of Rhombus

InEuclidean geometry, arhombus()
(pluralrhombiorrhombuses) is asimple(non-selfintersecting)quadrilateral whose four sides all have the
same length. Another name isequilateral quadrilateral,
since equilateral means that all of its sides are equal in
length. The rhombus is often called adiamond, after
thediamonds suit in playing cards which resembles the
projection of anoctahedraldiamond, or alozenge, though
the former sometimes refers specifically to a rhombus with
a 60 angle (seePolyiamond), and the latter sometimes
refers specifically to a rhombus with a 45 angle.
Every rhombus is aparallelogramand akite. A rhombus
with right angles is asquare.

What is Rhombus?
A parallelogram with opposite
equal acute angles, opposite
equal obtuse angles, and four
equal sides.
Any parallelogram with equal
sides, including a square.

Properties of Rhombus
The rhombus has the following
properties:
All the properties of a parallelogram apply
(the ones that matter here are parallel
sides, opposite angles are congruent, and
consecutive angles are supplementary).
All sides are congruent by definition.
The diagonals bisect the angles.
The diagonals are perpendicular bisectors
of each other.

Solving the Basic Area of

Rhombus

Examples
1.

Find the area of a rhombus with

diagonals12 cm and 14 cm.
84 cm2
Solution:
Area of rhombus =1/2d1d2
[Formula.]
=1/2 12 14
[Substitute the values ofd1andd2.]
Area of the rhombus = 84 cm2

2.In an isosceles trapezoid parallel sides

are13 cmand16 cmand height is4
cm.Find its area.
58 cm2
Solution:
Area of trapezoid is =1/2h(b 1+b2).
[Formula.]
=1/2 4 (13 + 16)
[Substituting.]
Area = 58 cm2
[Simplify.]

3.

Find the area of the rhombus whose diagonals are12

cm and 8 cm.

48cm2
Area of a rhombus =1/2d1d2
[Formula.]
Area of rhombus with given diagonals =1/2 12 8
[d1= 12 andd2= 8]

= 48 cm2
[Simplify.]

4.

If AE = 10 cm, AD = 8 cm andAB = 16 cm,then find the area of the

trapezoid.
. 152 cm2
In the trapezoid shown ABCD is a rectangle in which BC = AD = 8cm and DC =
AB = 16cm
[Opposite sides of a rectangle are congruent.]
In the right angled triangle ADE, AE = ED + AD
[Pythagorean theorem.]
10 = ED + 8
[Substitute 10 for AE, 8 for AD.]
ED = 36, ED =36= 6
[Solve for ED.]
So, EC = ED + DC = 6 + 16 = 22 cm
[Pythagorean theorem.]
Now area of trapezoid = (1/2) (h) (EC + AB) = (1/2) (8) (22 + 16)
[Formula.]
= 152 cm2.
[Substitute 8 forh, 22 for EC, 16 for AB and simplify.]

5.
Ifbb= 13.6andcc= 17,find

the area of the

trapezoid, if PQST is a square.

173.4 cm2
From the right triangle QRS, QS2+ SR2= QR2
[Pythagorean theorem.]
h2= 172- 13.62= 104.0,h= 10.2 cm
[Substitutehfor QS, 13.6 for SR, 17 for QR and solve forh.]
TR = TS + SR = 10.2 + 13.6 = 23.8 cm
[Since TSQP is a square, QS = TS = 10.2 cm.]
Area = (1/2)(h)(TR + PQ)
[Formula.]
= (1/2)(10.2)(23.8 + 10.2) = 173.4 cm 2
[Substitute 10.2 forh, 23.8 for TP, 10.2 for PQ and simplify.]

Rectangle

Brief History of
Rectangle
InEuclidean plane geometry, arectangleis
aquadrilateralwith fourright angles. It can also be
defined as an equiangular quadrilateral, since
equiangular means that all of its angles are equal
(360/4 = 90). It can also be defined as a
parallelogram containing a right angle. A rectangle with
four sides of equal length is asquare. The termoblong
is occasionally used to refer to a non-squarerectangle.
[ A rectangle withvertices ABCDwould be denoted
asABCD.
The word rectangle comes from theLatin rectangulus,
which is a combination ofrectus(right)
andangulus(angle).

What is Rectangle?
A four-sided shape that is made up of
two pairs of parallel lines and that
has four right angles;especially:a
shape in which one pair of lines is
longer than the other pair.
A flat geometric four-sided figure
with right angles and with opposite
sides parallel.

Properties of Rectangle
All the properties of a parallelogram
apply (the ones that matter here are
parallel sides, opposite sides are
congruent, and diagonals bisect each
other).
All angles are right angles by
definition.
The diagonals are congruent.
