3D CONCRETE PRINTING

3-DIMENSIONAL PRINTING
A process for making a physical object from a threedimensional digital model, typically by laying down many
successive thin layers of a material.

HISTORY
Additive manufacturing
1980s
2000s
2010 and onward

CONCRETE PRINTING PROCESS

CONCRETE PRINTING PROCESS

The printing process:
1. Data preparation
2. Concrete preparation
3. Component printing

EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM AND METHODS

Critical properties in the printing process are:

Extrudability
Buildability

EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM AND METHODS

1. Extrudability
The capacity of concrete to pass
through the small pipes/nozzles at the
printing head.
Influenced by:
Workability (consistency) of the concrete mix

EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM AND METHODS

2. Buildability
How well a material remains in
position without collapsing.

WHAT MAKES CONCRETE STRONG?

1. Self-compacting concrete

OPTIMUM MIX PROPORTIONS

Sand to Binder ratio 3:2:
70% cement, 20% fly ash and 10% silica fume plus 1.2 kg/m3 of 12/0.18 mm
length/diameter polypropylene fibers.

Water to binder ratio of 0.26:

Together with a superplasticiser and retarder with dosages of 1% and 0.5%
by weight of binder.

ADVANTAGES OF 3D CONCRETE PRINTING

Faster and accurate construction
Saves 30 60% of construction waste
Reduce production times by 50 - 70%
Reduce labor costs by 50 - 80%
Less expensive construction method
Customize homes and buildings
Reduced health and safety risks
Environmentally friendly
Rebuild homes affected by natural calamities

DISADVANTAGES

Reduced employee numbers in the industry

A limited number of materials can be used
Transportation is a requirement
Storage of the printer on site
Takes time to setup the printer
Costly Printer
