12.8
12-8 A liquid-phase reaction A + B + C is conducted in a 50-L
batch reactor. The reaction is first-order with respect to each
reactant.
(a) Determine the time required for 90% conversion of A, if(i) the
reaction occurs adiabatically;(ii) the reaction occurs isothermally
at T,.
(b) Determine d and T, (as functions of time), if a cooling coil is
placed in the tank to maintain the isothermal conditions required
in (a) part (ii).
(c) For (a) part (i), sketch the conversion-versus-time and
temperature-versus-time profiles.
Data: CA0 and CBO are 0.50 mol/L and 0.75 mol/L, respectively.
The initial temperature (Ti) is 400 K, and the heat capacity of the
reactor contents is 3.8 J /g K. The fluid density is 0.75 g /cm 3, and
the heat transfer parameter (UAc) for part (b) is 100 W/K. The
reaction is exothermic (- 145 kJ/mol A and

A liquid-phase reaction A + B
2C is conducted in a non
isothermal multitubular PFR. The reactor
tubes (7 m long, 2
cm in diameter) are surrounded by a coolant which
maintains a constant wall temperature. The reaction is
pseudo-first-order with respect to A, with kA = 4.03 X l05 e5624/T
/s. Th e mass flow rate is constant at 0.06 kg/s, the
density is constant at 1.025 g/cm3, and the temperature at
the inlet of the reactor (T,) is 350 K.
(a) Develop expressions for dXa/dx and dT/dx.
(b) Plot f*(x) profiles for the following wall temperatures (T,):
350 K, 365 K, 400 K, and 425 K.
